lol, yer it was a christening, it been an eventfull day to say the least, first off the driver buted my deck stand loading it onto the van, tgot setup, the fogger set the fire alarm off during tests, a lamp blew and didnt have a spare, client said no old music, so i was playing top 40s and the laest house and dance, then they decided to come and ask for 80's and 90's... can quite figure that one out :/ ... thebuffet oened and i got a plate of food then when i looked up it was completelty gone so i ended up being hungry all day... i had those annoying "have you got that song, you know that one by ermmm" people... plus when i ponted to the request list they would right the name of an artist and not a song... then when i played a track they were coming over saying "not thi one that other one, stop it and look for the other one" ... i was like WTF??? at one point i had three people all stood round chatting crp about songs so i promptly stopped the music and sadi "EFF OFF" only the four letter version. only reason was because i tried like ten times to asc politely..
a little later and my other scanner went off... then my internet did so my netsearch wouldnt work lol.. then to top it off, everythign started kiking off once people had had a few jars...
so i thing most everything that could go wrong, did... on the plus side, i was told i got a 9 out of 10 for my performance and i got another gig booked up :D so thats a bonus..

@blu
Congratz man! A first performance where all goes right is no fun at all.. And yeah.. I guess we all forgot to mention never to believe the customer when he's convinced the crowd wants xyz..

Solved well, but try to send people away with whatever answer satisfies them the moment they are in front of your nose, but don't let them stack up around you or you'll find yourself dangerously outnumbered on your own. I've dj-ed for the worst kind of frat students for years and you need to learn to make a firm stand when they come with whatever request they have. Eventually you are the DJ, you know best what choices to make and you decide.

the answer i gave most often was a finger in the direction of the request list and shouted "write it down" ..... but as they got a bit more drunk and couldnt really control a pen, thats when the "got talent" performances started. over all it went pretty well what i did find though was it was pretty dificult to keep the set ging without having to play some stuff they didnt know. the way i looked at it was this "i cant play the next request untill i play something i can transition it with, hence... heres one you may not have heard but it keeps the beat flowing and the set continuous., the issue with this was people seemed to dislike the fact that i wasnt just playing the songs "they" wanted...
this kind of made me a little nervous and curious as to if i was doing something wrong.

hold on?????? TAYLA???? what on earth made you thing it was a christening???

Sounds like a typical "first gig" :)
About the spare bulbs: get yourself the long-life versions. They are more expensive but not only will they last longer, they are also more transport-resistant. And make sure your lights are completely cooled down before handling. So take down your sound first and leave your lights for last.

i'm sure he meant baptism by fire kinda thing......
my christening was tough ...
a stripper declared " i christen thee chucknorrisyouwimps " and
she cracked the champagne bottle across my forehead.....
that smarts , i tell ya
take the requests for what they're worth ....usually zero
after every request i add the following "that I THE GREAT ME , doesn't like"
so it becomes a universal request , like this .....
don't play any old stuff "that I THE GREAT ME , doesn't like"
don't play any 80's "that I THE GREAT ME , doesn't like"
and when they say " this crowd does not like this " then i have an addon for that also......
they are just dancing out of sympathy to make me feel better ........???

It's hard sometimes, but you need to try and get specific song info out of them. I'll even pass the headphones over and let them have a listen to make sure it's the one they want.

Congrats!!!! Welcome to the "professional DJ life" (professional cuz you got paid I hope lol)
So, my advice, don't buy replacement lamps. Get rid of those lights altogether, get lasers ore LEDs.

yeah i want to go with LED's but what i tend to find is a lot of them arent very bright and the ones that are, are extremely expensive. i will build up my lights as i go i have my next gig on the 1st july, so in the mean time, ill replace all the lamp holders and all the lamps in my lights, plus stock up on spare lamps just to be on the safe side.

I've only been doing parties for a short while - pay on the door dance events prior to that. First Wedding I did was just up the road so I went up and set everything up to run through their mixer desk and amp lunchtime and popped home. Pitched up later and all the sound stuff that had been working now didn't. Panic. Heard later that some kids had been in there so guess they has been messing with it.
So Rule #1 is never, ever leave your kit unattended.
A 60th party a couple of weeks ago had a slide show playing via clipback and some background tracks whilst everyone was queueing for the buffet so I went for a leak. When I walked back in the room the music was playing but the crowd were looking mystified at a blank, bright white projection screen. I had already got my backup laptop running with VDJ open and dupliplicate playlist/videos cued. Swap the projector cable and I was away without a break.
Rule #2 is don't just have a backup laptop available, have it running and ready for immediate action.
