Hello everyone,
So I am new to the DJ scene with only a years of loose experience. I am having trouble deciding what I want to do about speakers. There are a lot of links, sorry but please let me know if you can help out! My main question is at the bottom
Here is my situation:
-I bought a pair of MTX 12" off of a kid form craigslist for about $120
http://www.amazon.com/MTX-TP112-Theater-Standing-Speaker/dp/B0000E3DQB/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
-After realizing that these things aren't going to do much I tore out the old woofer and tweeter drivers and spent $500 on all of this
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=290-415
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=264-270
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=290-622&FTR=eminence%20px2:3k5%202-way%20crossover%203,500%20hz
-Now... I have a crappy amp running these things. It's a pyle pro 1400.
http://www.amazon.com/Pyle-PTA1400-Professional-Power-Amplifier/dp/B0010KCP98/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332963836&sr=8-1
So, I am going to be DJing small to middle sized places (I would say a room about 50ft x 50ft max). I would also like to dual use speakers for home use
******* What I am wondering is this: Do you think that I should try and sell these speakers (and lose some money) and buy a whole new system or keep the ones that I have and buy a subwoofer? Active systems seem easier and I have had a lot of trouble trying to find a sub that I want to work with the setup. I am worried that I will just waste more money instead of starting over and doing it right. If I do get a new system, I would be willing to spend up to $800. Please let me know what you think and what sort of systems you would recommend. Either active or passive will work.
Thanks so much!!

Just my 2 cts...
I think you missed on the cross-overs. Your high-drivers produce the best at a cross-over frequency of 2000 Hz, and your current cross-overs split at 3500 hz, That means you loose a lot of power on your mid-high frequencies. BTW: You should have bought your low-frequency-drivers in a 8 Ohm-version in stead of your 16 Ohm-versions.....
I think you're on the right way to improve your current setup, but miscalculate on the details. If you want to calculate thing the right way, have a look at www.kbapps.com. They have some calculators that will lead you in the right direction. I am not suggesting, my speakers are build with the help of those calculators and I am very pleased with them.
So try. It's always cheaper to improve your current cross-overs than buying a new standard setup.
And I guess your current setup will do in the places where you play if your speakers are properly balanced.

I think it is a good idea to have 16-ohms if you are going to built 2-drivers in one cabinet for your low end connected in parallel the result will be very good 8-ohms resistance and Eminence Speaker are good and that is standard. As martin said, you will have problem if you are going to build a single driver in a cabinet as rarely or maybe no amps right now on the market running on 16-ohms for you to drive your low frequency driver and you have to build your own power amp for this setup.
If you are going to do your setup in Two-Way (HI-LOW) and using those crossover in the link photos you have i think that is not a good idea to use a fixed crossover as signal also fixed and that acts like a dividing network for your drivers, it is better to built your cabinet with "JACK OR SPEAKON CONNECTOR" with normal and simple "INPUTS" without those crossovers. I suggest to use those rackmount crossover that is available in the market like (rane, bss, xta ect.) which is more handy and easy to alter and adjust if frequency doesn't sounds right.
