This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Do you think a DJ who sits during an event (specifically weddings) is professional? Yes or No. Feel free to elaborate on your answers & reasons.

Yes....I sit all the time of course I do have bad knees & a bad back but I do stand for most of the gig though....so I can't stand for 4-6 hours at a time....As long as we are rocking it why does it matter if we sit or stand??? But I do stand a lot but I like 2 have a chair for when my pains start kicking in...

by definition , YES .

1.
a. Of, relating to, engaged in, or suitable for a profession: lawyers, doctors, and other professional people.
b. Conforming to the standards of a profession: professional behavior.
2. Engaging in a given activity as a source of livelihood or as a career: a professional writer.
3. Performed by persons receiving pay: professional football.
4. Having or showing great skill; expert: a professional repair job.
n.
1. A person following a profession, especially a learned profession.
2. One who earns a living in a given or implied occupation: hired a professional to decorate the house.
3. A skilled practitioner; an expert.

Perhaps, by defenition, one who sits is a professional. And of course, if there are medical reasons then i guess that's fair enough, but personally, I prefer to stand at gigs. I do think that it gives off a totally different vibe from the DJ if they are sitting down. It's all about body language if you ask me...and open body language gives off confidence and approachability. NONE of my guys sit on the job.

I guess another way to look at it is...how would YOU feel if your DJ sat at YOUR wedding? Personally, i wouldn't like my DJ to sit at a party of mine. For me, it seems as if the DJ can't be bothered if they are sitting. Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying that is the case, that's just my personal opinion. Imagine going to a big concert with a live jock...how would it seem if they were sitting down, you know?

I guess it's a case of personal choice...and what you think about the client's needs. Just my two pence worth.

Cheers..and keep spinnin'...(",)

Like many others I'm not capable to stand for a long time. I try to, but I have to sit from time to time or at least get some support to relieve my legs and back. If there are any, I prefer a barstool to keep the impression that I am still standing and capable of moving. Because of the booth it's hardly visible.
The moment I'm gonna need a chair to survive the night, I will quit....

I think sitting during down time (i.e. - cocktails and dinner) is totally acceptable, but anytime you're on the mic (eg. making an announcement or doing the bridal party introductions) you should be standing. And once the dancing starts you should be standing at all times.

I think its ok to sit occasionally however not through the whole gig.

It depends on the arena, a wedding DJ with a bad back due to carrying heavy gear for 20 years is not the same as Tiesto who recently won an endurance award for the number of times he pumped his fist whilst engaged in 6 deck mixing.

Depends how much their paying you!

The only time i sit when i am hired to play is when i am eating. I dont sit because i dont feel comfortable mixing while im sitting. I get busy mixing up all types of music while i am standing. I dont think its apropriate to sit while your dj and it makes the Dj look like anyone can do what he is doing.

I will sit during dinner music. Once Im talking, or mixing Ill be up on the feet. On clubs setting Ill have a bar stool or something to lean on simpley because I also have issues standing in one spot for a long time. I did do a motorcycle club gig a few weeks ago were I played straight up rock the whole time. They wanted nothing more then back ground music. So I just took there request and let it roll. Long boring day so did lot of sitting on that one.

I rarely sit or eat at gigs, but thats just me. And if you must eat at a wedding, do it away from your set-up.

I myself never sit during a gig.It looks more professional in my opinion.I also never eat at my setup. If I do eat I will find a place out of the way.

This ^^

I have been to a few weddings where the DJ sat down. I think it really brings the vibe of the room down. A DJ is suppose to be the life of the party. Sitting down behind the decks does NOT project that. Whether it is professional or not is not the question, it does not however project the right thing to the guests in a party atmosphere.

But to each his own......

I agree with all of the above. Whilst it is your own choice whether you stand or sit at gigs, it's the impression that this gives off. If it gives off negative vibes to other jocks, then imagine the sort of impression it gives to the people who are paying your wages.

Again, of course, each to his own.
