The cheapest VDJ version is the frree version, but that doesnt give you a discount...
You can always upgrade from the other versions there are, like you can see HERE
BUT I think if you bought lets say Broadcaster version, the discount you will get will not be more then the actual price, so I don't think it's worth it, Your friend can better purchase VDJ Pro at once.
You do get a discount when you buy a controller that comes with VDJ LE version...

The best option is to purchase a controller that comes with VirtualDJ LE and then upgrade to the full Pro.
NOTE: VirtualDJ Home FREE is for non-commercial use only. You can't use it at gigs where you are being paid and it will not work with any hardware controllers.
