Topic: Where Do I Go From Here?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Evening all,

I've got my annual bonus coming to me in the coming fortnight and after an amazing and successful first six weeks or so at my new weekly residency here in Folkestone, I am starting to wonder whether it is time for an upgrade already.

I'm using my VMS4 - but can't help but feel that I need something a bit more...

I have thought about investing in some CDJs - was gonna go for the Pioneer CDJ350s but don't think my budget is gonna be enough - so am thinking about the Numark NDX900.

It's either that, or possibly upgrading the controller, but where can I go from there?

Am also looking for speakers, specifically XLR compatible which is what I use in the bar/club that I play in and I want to create a similar set up in my bedroom, for practice and for my occasional sets on VDJ Radio.

Any suggestions?

Denon MC6000 .... better quality then the VMS4 but still compact, excellent mixer and can be used for broadcasting too!

I wouldn't recommend using PA speakers for monitoring at home.

You'd be better off with something designed for the job, such as KRK Rokits.

Where do you find the VMS4 is not meeting your needs? Do you need more buttons? Are you no longer happy with the controller? What is the "more" that you feel that you need?

It's difficult - sometimes it feels like it's on the edge of a precipice, just one second from disaster! I just want to take it to the next level!

Right now,

I'm looking at three potentials:

Numark Quad Mixdeck - best of both worlds
Denon MC6000 - natural progression
Vestax VCI400 - just looks stunning.

Opinions?

It all depends on what you want to do and what your routine is. In a nutshell I would say:

Numark Quad if you still want/ are required to be able to play CDs
MC6000 if a mobile DJ, because of the standalone Mixer function, size and Mics
VCI-400 for "controllerism" and custom mappings

Personally, I would go for one of the last mentioned two, since sound- and build-wise, you will not be looking for an upgrade any time soon. But like I said in the beginning, it all comes down to your priorities... I upgraded from the VMS4 to the VCI 400 and it was absolutely worth it!!!

I love my VCI-400!

I wonder when I am gonna get my VCI-400 icon though.. :p

+1

I guess we'll have to wait till V8, or it's just not that many of us to worth the trouble... ;-)

The only concern about getting the VCI-400 is the audio situation!

The Numark NS6 is really good. Its a nice in size and comfortable to mix on. The sound quality is really good and you have three outputs for many options. XLR main outs, RCA Booth & Rca Master. The Platters are great and the pitch bend is smooth when you turn the platters counter clock wise for nice blending.

@robertstr:

audio situation? With the latest set of drivers it rocks!

lack of rca sockets i meant to say!

I honestly wouldn't want to use anything but my Hercules RMX. I have a timecoded vinyl running it through it for venues I want to scratch at, but the RMX is solid and allows me to make solid transitions and blends. Since the buttons are 99% customizable, you can set it up just the way you like.

Simply purchase jack to RCA adaptors, or jack to RCA cables.

Evening all,

So this is where we're at right now.

Am looking at some second hand CDJ-400s - which I have to say don't inspire me at all - and at the price that I've been asked am seriously thinking - no thanks. The CDJ-350s intrigue only because of Rekordbox - but still.

Which leaves upgrading my controller - and probably getting a good deal on that.

So considering I have offered £750 for some CDJ-350s and £600 for some 400s. What would any of you recommend - go for the CDJs and be in a position to have the skills to play in a club without the lappy - or go the other way and just upgrade the controller?

How does buying a CD player necessarily give you the skills to play in a club without the lappy?
All you have to do is train without looking at the waveform or pressing sync. After you master beatmatching, burn some CDs and throw them in any CD player the club has. I am not saying go for the upgrade, just that you should make your decision based on the right reasons, as well as your personal priorities....
