Topic: Short freeze in vdj when loading songs

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hey guys,

When i load songs from my built in laptop hard drive they load and play fine.

But when loading them from my usb external hard drive virtual dj freezes for a few seconds then loads the song.

When this happerns the music keeps playing just the virtual dj software freezes briefly for a few seconds.

Thanks

The extrernal drive you have , does it have a power adapter with it or is it just usb ?>

Its usb powered.

But it has 2 usb's to plug in. One for data and one for power

Try a powered hub. You are using just the usb to power the drive, that could be it. I get little freezes from time to time and dont worry about it aswell, but mine are when loading on an internal drive..

Yes you need to get a Powered Drive The Western Digital is a good hard drive to get

That happens to me all the time. I have a powered hub and powered WD drives. I have learned how to deal with it so it doesn't affect my show...

Put VDJ in higher priority (taskmanager, show tasks of all users, than click on the VDJ task and set the priority), that will give VDJ some advantage over other windows processes.

I don't have this problem ever, your drives should be 7200 rmp and also having them on a powered hub, does help your laptop function at full power all the time, one other thing may be that your ext drive is failing, I would download the Mfg. drive test software and check them out asap..

One more thing I would recommend to you is buy a serious hard drive, like a Glyph or a G-tech, yeah they cost more, but they last reliably longer..

Good Luck,

Joey....

Use to happen to me too.Do what I did, I switched to a firewire external drive, that fixed it.

Problem now solved.

I went into device manager, usb root hub and in the properties for power management i unchecked the box "allow computer to turn off this disk to save power"

If that works, great. WD drives had built in power managemenet. If it has been sitting idle for a little while the drive will spin down. When you load the song the drive will have to wake up causing VDJ to hang. I use this, saw it on another post on this site:

thanks,

Some hard disk manufacturers may provide a utility to change the built-in power management settings.

Otherwise, if this is not available for your drive and it takes too long to wake from sleep, the only option is to replace it with a different drive from another manufacturer that does not have this problem.

Microsoft's default settings in most versions of Windows make you want to get in your car, drive up to Redmond Washington and go slap someone..hard. ;)

Or if you buy a drive with builtin power management, just delete the partition, make a new one, format the drive and you're ready to go.

I'm using Packard Bell's Carbon drive's (both 1 & 2 Tb), and they come with PW management, so had to do it that way to keep it from powering down all the time...

Works fine...

Deleting the partition won't help if the power management is built into the electronics/firmware of the disk itself (Or the USB controller card in the external hard disk enclosure.)

This has nothing to do with Microsoft either. It's a hardware/firmware feature in many cases (Although Windows has its own power management features that can easily be disabled.)

Many external drives are designed with typical home/office users in mind rather than DJ's who need the drive to wake very quickly.

I use this program to keep my drive alive. Its written by a DJ for DJ's it sends a few bytes of info to the drive every couple of minutes thus keeping it alive.
