Topic: Latency

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I'm not currently having any issues, but I was wondering after reading the wiki on it and after running my own latency tests, what is the

biggest cause of latency issues?.......An old computer?......Malware/Bloatware/Viruses?.......I use my same PC to DJ with that I do to web surf,

etc., but I keep the PC immaculately clean...... I do disable my wifi (internal) when running VDJ, but that's about it.....Just wondering how to

avoid problems in the future....Thanks for your input guys!! =D

the answer is all of the above... latency is the time it takes the computer to do what you want it to do, eg when you press a button it usually takes 5ms thats 0.005 seconds of 1/250th of a second, that's pretty quick of youi ask me, but anything that takes your processor away from the task is going to slow down the reaction time as everything in a computer is done consecutively not at the same time AFAIK.

That said the real killers are things that have to start processing from hybernating, like when your wifi wakes up & eats up your resources when searching for a network which happens every half an hour on mine if not disabled, or when your hard drive wakes up and your compuer wants to check its consistancy before starting it up, these will cause large spikes in you cpu and are the show killers, but things like bloatware decrease the amount of available cpu so the spikes are more noticable, So you need to manage it all if you have don't have a brand new computer capable of dealing with the pressures vdj puts on your computer.

Latency issue can be caused by quit a few things like wifi, battery on laptop, even the CD-ROM.

Pretty much anything that uses processes and boggs up your CPU.

I have had issues where even programs called bloatware which those programs come preinstalled from the manufacture.

I say to keep your computer clean best way to do it is not have your computer connected to the internet at all but again you may have to use the internet every now and agian if you dont have another computer.
And if you do make sure have an antivirus cause virus to cause alot of issue with latency therefore cause drops outs
and even freezes on your software. Hope this helps out some.

Latency when referring to audio applications is the time it takes for the audio to travel from the software to your ears via the sound card.

Using a consumer grade sound card (i.e. onboard one) usually results in latency that's caused enough delay to be audible and to cause timing problems. Using a sound card designed for pro audio use will normally overcome this issue.

Thanks for the input guys!!

Latecity issues can be from Alot of progranms running. Delete what you dont need and keep the main programs. Tweak your laptop, Turn off wifi, BlueTooth, Turn off windows updates, Set laptop for performance rather than let windows choose. Virus protection can cause latecity isssues also.
