Topic: Wireless Mic Suggestions

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Looking to get a new wireless mic setup for wedding speeches and that kind of thing. The set I have now is VHF and the range is pretty short. My boom mic is UHF and has much better range so I was looking to go UHF. Trying to stay under $200. Having a pair of mics would be nice because then I could retire the VHF set I have otherwise I will keep the pair of VHF mics for Karaoke where people stand closer to my setup.

Was looking at the VocoPro 3200.

Anybody have experience with these or this brand?

I don't have experience with that brand. I was like you and was trying to conserve, but ended up splurging on a Shure PGX24/Beta 58 combo. It was well worth every penny spent as it has been rock solid every time.

Wish I could. Got layed off from the day job and am using the deposit money from my next wedding to make sure I have decent mics for it. That is where the budget limit comes from. I got my boom mic on Craigslist for a steal but haven't seen any decent handhelds in my area for sale lately.

Wireless mic are one of those situations where money makes a HUGE difference. Don't buy low, buy deep and go long...

I have a shure a Pgx4/ Beta 58a wirelees mic system and i dont like the way it sounds. This thing cost over 400 dollars and i am not satisfied with the sound. When i went to the DJ expo this year, saw this in the Gemini Booth. Its looked very interesting. http://www.123dj.com/microphones/wireless/uhf5200m.html

I spoke to a dj that owned a Shure Mic plus a Sennheiser wireless mic and said that he had a Gemini mic and it sounded very good.

The EV mics are very good and so is the Sennheiser Mics. The shure mics are good based on the model you buy. Not all of them sound the same.

@Caliente-

Any word on the Gemini UHF-4200? It fits into my price range better. From the descriptions it seems like they use the same mics, but he 4200 has fewer features on the base station. Less channels 100 vs 1156 and a lower number of mics allowed on the system 8 vs 20 . I don't know if those differences are worth $100 in my situation. I mean if I can't find a clear channel with 100 options it is going to be rough night anyway !

Thank you everybody for the input. I would love to be able to drop 4-500 on a mic but that just is not in the cards right now :(

i recently updated from the shure pg to the slx beta and i think its my best wireless mic yet.
i also have a seinnhizer wireless for singers

Do not buy Gemini what ever you do, they can't seem to make wireless mic's that work properly.

If I lived in the states I would buy a Shure PGXD digital receiver, possibly a dual receiver if they do one.

My experience with wireless mics is that a decent mic e.g. Shure seems cheap once you've owned and experienced the cheap mics on the market.

At the end of the day theres cheap and then theres cheap. I just bought a PGX and SM58 (ch38) for £320 which I think is the best value for money you can get.

I personally have a shure ulxp beta 87 wireless, but I also have a audio technica wireless 3000 series as a back-up and it works very well. It's also substantially cheaper than the shure.

Believe me I don't like to cheap out on stuff, my whole rig is QSC and other pretty decent components but the funds just aren't there for a $500 mic - gotta make the mortgage first :) The one mistake I made when putting my current system together was cheaping out on the mics. They worked fine for a while but I am noticing a big discrepancy between their range when I am setting up , and actual range when the place is full of people. I doubt this will be a long term solution just need something reliable to get through a few gigs to get some cash flow going.

You got our recommendations from our experiences.

A good cheap mic, no such thing I'm afraid, you might as well stick with the one you have.

I bought my first Vocopro wireless at a pawnshop in Texas and it was a uhf 3200 dual wireless mic system. I have used it countless times with no trouble at all. I have just purchased another one (for a theater group performing live shows and plays) and would highly recommend it to anyone needing the use of a wireless mic. Vocopro also has one that has rechargable batteries built in if you do not want to replace batteries. I have found that the 3200 have a very good battery life in them also. All in all I have been very impressed with the quality of the Vocopro uhf 3200 with sound quality and the range.
