Evening gents,

Just been looking at controllers after being a timecode user for the last few years.

I've noticed a lot of these controllers appear to be replacements for mixers, as in they have mixer faders, eqs, gains and PFL built in.

This all sounds great, but then I look at the mic inputs and none of them seem to have any EQ on the mic channel, which in my case would need to bring a seperate mixer back into the equation.

Am I missing something here?

Denon MC-6000 has bass, mid, treble seperately adjustable on both mic channels.

There is also an echo, auto ducking (which is roumoured to be improved in the next update) and post so the mics can be sent to the booth out as well.

If you have the money the sound quality (especially the mics) is excellent.

Thanks Keith, was just looking at that on the HTFR website. Was thinking of heading over to have a play with one tomorrow.

I like the look of it, not sure I can justify the price as I only do 1 gig a week these days. Then again I do use an RME external soundcard with expresscard and if memory serves me right the pair of them cost me about £600, so maybe time to sell them and put the proceeds to one of those lovely looking Denons.

Is there anything else that compares with the Denon? Are the mic EQ's not found on the lower specs?

Would the Denon work well with a high end laptop?

Hi Gary,

I only do one gig a week as well but hey .......

The MC-6000 is excellent, I have had it since December and it's a pleasure to use. You can custom map it to death if you want and it's a really solid piece of kit.

It will work with pretty much any laptop, however there are issues between VDJ and the Denon Asio drivers (it's a long story) but if you use WDM instead the sound output is perfect.

Would the Denon Asio driver be needed if I wanted to plug turntables in and use 2 decks for timecode as well?

I guess i'll find out tomorrow, but how portable is the unit?

Also just seen the Numark N4. I've never rated Numark equipment, but it has been a few years since i've touched anything by them. Does anyone know the quality of the N4 and if it has EQ on the mic channel?

Hi Gary,

MC-6000 does not support timecode at all. It was never in the design of the unit and defeats the purpose of it being an all in one midi controller. It is very portable and swanflight have a range of cases available off the shelf.

I have never been a fan of Numark however their recent units do seem to be good quality judging by feedback I have read here.

Best go and try both these units out and see what suits you best.

I use the Numark MixDeck and find it very accommodating. The mic channel has a separate EQ and it has 2 inputs that can be used for timecodes.
 
Well, I made the purchasr today. Now the proud owner of a Denon 6000. So far so good. I don't have my own PA system to hook it into, so just been playing around with it through my headphones.

Seeing as i'm going to be very unprofessional and turn up to my gig tomorrow night and plug it in to test it properly straight off, any tips?

All the mapping is fine so i know I have complete control over VDJ, so thats one issue I don't have to worry about, the main thing I wonder about is the mixer set up, internal or PC etc. I won't be connecting anything else into it to start with, so as a more experienced user, what would you suggest?

Do you want to use 2 decks or 4?

That decision then means different configurations.

Best not just turn up at a gig with something new until you have set and thoroughly tested it.

I understand what you mean about turning up to a gig unless its been tested, but i've tested it as far as I can at home so it will have to be in the venue. Good thing is I can always run off the house system for the night if it comes to it, no problem with that.

Ok, i'm excited now :)

I will want to start with 2 decks only. Never used four before so two is fine for starters. I have installed the latest ASIO drivers and ugraded the firmware.

I was hoping for a quick set up guide, but mine has come with Tractor LE, even though it has the VDJ logo on the front. Not to worry, can you point me in the right direction Keith?

I would say use the analog mixer for eqs, the software eq is kinda touchy.....

Ok, What are the pros and cons over using the analog / software mixer?

I have read there are issues with the ASIO drivers, is that correct?
 
 
Oh dear, and I thought this was going to be easy.

If i'm using int mixer settings on the MC6000, should the VDJ deck faders still be moving with the MC6000 faders?

In INT MIX mode, they shouldn't move as you move them, however due to a bug in Denon's firmware, they will initially set at start-up to where you have them on the controller. To avoid this, you will need to change the appropriate mappings to nothing as directed on the above page.

The default mapping is designed for 4 deck use with software-based mixer.
 
No, even after following all the above instructions the VDJ mixer is still moving with the Denons mixer.
 
Have you changed the relevant mappings to "nothing" and restarted the controller & VDJ?

Just read the link again, its gives instructions and then says alternatively, not as well as. I can't think of anything less clear for a set of instructions if it must be done but is also an alternative?
