My understanding is that a pro license is required for using the LPD8...Is this true of all midi controllers? For instance Hercules...

No, not for ALL controllers...
Because some controllers are designed for DJing, and ship with a Lite (controller specific) version of VDJ.
Other controllers, such as the LPD8, are just for general use - and as such don't ship with software.
So if you buy something like a Numark DJ2GO controller (very low cost) you'll get VDJ included, which will work with that controller.

But remember that the DJ2Go is NOT an LE version - it's a LITE version. So very much limited at all !
Anyway - the LE or Lite versions only work with the Controller they get delivered with.
