Topic: Midi Keyboard or Synth?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

What do you guys prefer for remixing and sampling? Midi Keyboard controller or Synth?

I am torn between the new M-Audio Venom (Synth) and the Akai MPK49 (Midi Controller). They are fairly comparable in price. I am leaning toward the M-Audio at the moment but then the Akai looks great.

What is you guys thoughts?

Akai MPK mini, all in one for £69 (ebay)

since synths are primarily digital, there isn't really much difference in the sound quality produced if you have the right soundcard, so I would go for features that you can use and feel of the keys pads knobs etc... but I suspect that a synth that costs the same as a midi controller wouldn't be that good anyway... plus you have the power to update your synth and samples with softsynths by just buying another program

Youd be surpsised at how well the mpk mini works for production. And its fully asignable and mappable.

Thanks for the input. I wouldn't say that a Synth wouldn't be that good at the same pricing point as a controller. The Akai Mini is 499us, M-Audio Venom 499us, Akai MPK49 (Controller) is 449us. The M-Audio has gotten tremendous reviews and is mappable as well. From everyone I have looked at that did a review they say the sound is unbelievable.

I may flip a coin! :)

EDIT: I was looking at the MINIAK and not the Mini 25 key. Looking into this one now.

again I would be looking at the features, the feel and in the case of the synth sound before making any decisions

I just went and picked up an APK mini. I will be probably be getting an APK MiniAK synth VERY soon. That thing is very very good. They did not have a venom in stock so didn't get to try it. I will wait to try the venom first but the MiniAK is in top of the list.

Now to go play in Logic!!!
