My mousepad suddenly is very laggy and sluggish... very frustrating to use it. This also happens when booting in SAFE mode. It ONLY happens when plugged in - not when on battery power.

I have a very new SONY VAIO with i7 processor, NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M video card, Windows 7 64 bit, 4GB RAM, with the Denon MC6000, ASIO driver version 2.2.

Any idea what might cause this?

try control panel -> power options, see if you have different settings for when the lappy is plugged in, you should set hard drive, usb to never turn off (sleep) for while using vdj while your there, its a power saving setting that will slow down vdj if either goes to sleep

also i would update the touchpad drivers.

personally though i use an external usb mouse. you get much more control and ease of use than with a touchpad.

if you put an external mouse into the laptop and its no longer sluggish, then you know its an internal issue. as synth said power options. ive had loads of past problems with power settings putting usb ports and hdd's to sleep but now i make sure all that stuffs turned off.

btw the options are in the advanced power options.
