You follow a detailed business plan because your running your own business. Someone that's starting out, You cant expect them to do everthying you do. You have to experience things as they come along. There are djs that just want to do simple parties and other DJ's that want to take it to the next level and do Weddings, Swett 15's or 16s, Corporate events etc.
I don't expect anyone to run their businesses the way I run mine. Different strokes for different folks. I am simply pointing out that there is a whole lot more to this than buying (insert controller here) and a pair of (insert PA here).
I wish I had someone there to answer my questions and guide me in making the right decisions when I started 20+ years ago. Back then it was EXPENSIVE to get into this business. I rented gear for the first several years. I spent upwards of $40 to buy a cd just for a single track.
This gentleman came here asking for advice on speakers. My advice is to make sure he makes a proper investment in the right gear. The only way to make that decision, is to do one's homework, i.e. business plan.
Now if he were to say specifically what types of events, what kinds of music, what types of venues, a ball park of what he plans to charge, and how much he wants to profit, then I would be able to offer my opinion in the form of specific speakers that will handle his events and the music he will be playing. I can suggest speakers that will perform successfully in the venues he plans on using them, i.e. parents basement vs grand ballroom. Lastly, I could suggest speakers that will fit within his budget, allow him to make a profit, and will provide enough income to reinvest into better gear or perhaps a second system, whatever the business plan dictates.
If this comes across as harsh, it was not meant that way and I apologize.
I will leave you with this thought:

I have never met a DJ who is content with average. I would challenge the new DJ's to pour all the dedication and attention to detail into even the simplest of parties...For you are ALWAYS on stage and your next gig could be a wedding for a guest that was at that "simple party"...what happens next? That, my friends, is up to you.
