im struggling a bit on deciding which hand to scratch with....i know it sounds wierd but im constantly swaping hands and cant really work out which one im more comfortable with. how did you guys decide?
or should i just carry on and just forget about which hand im using.

If you can do it with both hands, then it really shouldn't matter. It is always been considered you scratch with the turntable close to that hand (Left, T.T. 1 and right T.T. 2).
I for one, can only scratch with my right hand, but I comfortable with doing it that way and crossing hands to each T.T. or jogwheel, while keeping my left hand on the crossfader.
You may be comfortable with just going with the flow of using whatever hand at the opportune time.
Either way, Happy Mixing!

If your scratching with both hands then I would just go with the flow until you figure out what side your stronger at. For me some reason I'm More comfortable with my left but I'm a right handed person.

Interesting topic/question ....
Every scratch dj knows well that most scratch techniques require equal skills on both hands, because what you do in the crossfader and the mixer is the same or sometimes more important than the the scratch itself on the platter or the jog.
So it depend on the scratch. If the scratch require fast and accurate cuts on the crossfader i use the left hand on the platter doing relaxing/slow movements usually while the right hand do the magic on the mixer... and i do the opposite if i need to have a better control on the platter.
For a left handed person this will be the other way around, but anyway swapping hands and practice can produce some interesting results.
Also having both hands prepared equally is the way to go, because when you play live usually there is no option to swap the decks..
Lastly there are a few turntablist scratch dj's who prefer to have the turntables in one side, or in any combination... like the famous Dj David. This is from 1991...

WOW, that guy is supreme.
im finding when im scratching i sometimes get into a rutt ...lemme explain
i have a really fast fader hand on my right, and my left has good platter control.
however
my right is great for baby, forward and scribble scratches. and my left is good for controlled fader movements.
hence why im a bit undecided. but judging by the comments recieved, i think training both hands and just going with the flow is my best option.
still though i would like to hear from more members on this subject.

If are using both hands on both decks, then keep it up!! Im more of an open fader scratcher, meaning I don't do to much with the fader. As of lately I've been practicing more with both hands. Trying not to cross my arms. But like Coach I to have gotten used to crossing over. I can juggle but my left hand is the dominate.
So if your good with both hands, keep it up. It's just like skateboarding, try to do everything goofy and regular stance.

i always skated goofy, i never once landed a successfull kickflip or shove it in regular.
im currently practicing open fader, cutting, transforming, scribbling etc etc..just trying to mix it up and create some patterns.
one thing i am having a problem with though i would much prefer if i had a fader reverse on my mixer :( training my hand to cut the opposite way that comes naturally is a bit of a pain in the ass.

I'VE BEEN PATTING MY HEAD AND RUBBING MY BELLY...AND OTHER THINGS THAT ARE DIFFICULT TO DO WITH MY LEFT HAND. MIGHT BE GOOFY SOUNDING BUT I THINK IT MIGHT HELP IN THE LONG HALL.

lol, i would deffo beg to differ on that one, ive been able to rub my belly and pat my head bothe ways with both hands since i was a kid.
i find better practice comes from the bedroom, flicking the c**t and rubbing the boobies works better. you see its very similar actions, fast on the little one and steady and soft on the big one. ;) , with regards to the big one you know if she jumps your going too rough, and in regards to the little one, if it makes her squeal, moan and judder you know your doing something right.
(thats probably the most oddball comparison ive ever made, but its quite true lol)
you gotta treat your equipment like a woman...love it, respect it, and abuse it when it wants to be..lol.
