Topic: Newb to DJ... looking at equip. Would like opinions

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I recently have the itch to get into DJing... more so just for personal use and house parties. I might get into some payin gigs later on.

I was lookin at the HERCULES DJ CONSOLE 4-Mx unit along with VDJ Pro version 7.

I've got a Windows 7 laptop, with a 20inch external monitor and a 5.1 speaker setup.

What do you all think? I'm more concerned about the 4-MX unit... Is there another All-in-one unit that I should check out?

Should I look at getting seperate peices (2 x table top units) and mixer? Would there be any benefit for a beginner?

I'm not a Hercules user but there are plenty of them in the VDJ community and I'm sure some will chime in. The best thing to do before buying any piece of gear is to a) research it thoroughly and b) try before you buy whenever possible. Search around the forums and see what the reviews are, google different controllers, stop in at the local music store to test a few, etc. It won't matter if I think it's the best controller in the world if it doesn't work for you. You're the one who needs to use it and like it in the end so take your time and make the right decision for you.

You don't necessarily need a controller to throw a party with VDJ 7, but you will need a external sound card & a pair of cans to listen to cues without one.
Shop around and compare controllers, theres going to be some new releases this summer like the Numark NS6.
Honestly, DJ'ing isn't something you just wake up and decide your going to do, its not like buying a sport bike or doing a tandem skydive.
However, VDJ 7, a good laptop and a Hercules controller are a great start. You may also want to consider a good pair of headphones, external hard drive, black extension cords, etc....
Good Luck!
