Topic: Call-ins from skype

Well, seeing as how my internet radio station got a good amount of hits in the last week or two, I decided that I'm going to try to do call-ins where my and someone else can call me and we can talk about stuff. I looked it up yesterday and found the exact instructions somewhere, but I went to bed, and when I woke up, I couldn't find it. So here is my question, does anyone have a link to a page with good instructions to set-up skype call-ins. Also, is it necessary to use a second computer for the calls, cause I do have an extra laptop, but I don't want to use it if I don't have to. If anyone could answer any of these questions, that would be great.

This depends a lot how your setup is configured. Could you give a brief description what kind of hardware you have? Mixer, soundcard, controller, etc? Are you broadcasting to shoutcast server from the same computer you use for DJ'ing etc?
 
It's have a really basic set-up, my sound card is a behringer (if i spelled that right) and I am DJing from the same computer my server is on. Of course, I have an extra laptop if it is necessary. I don't use a mixer/controller, etc though I am saving up for one. If there is anything else you need to know, just reply
 
It all boils down to the number of soundcards and, what you use to connect them with.
 
Which Behringer sound card? Behringer is just a brand name, what's the model number?

It would help a lot if you had an external mixer and a sound card with enough inputs and outputs. That way you could for example route VDJ decks to channels 1 & 2 in the mixer and Skype to channel 3, route your mixer's master output back to your sound cards line input and broadcast that signal via Shoutcast.
 
Looking for the exact same info... Other DJ's on my station have resorted to butchering mobile headsets to craete patch leads from their mobiles for cellular or skype calls, butI'm suer there must be a better way.

I'm guessing a second sound card is necessary. I'm using an analog mixer which has a spare channel I could feed the caller in to. What I am trying to get me head around is how to route the mic. So my studio mic is also my skype mic. But then I have to work out how I can talk to the caller without broadcasting it for off air chat.

I think the following software should record the phonecall independent of playback if using a single soundcard: http://voipcallrecording.com/MP3_Skype_Recorder - you could then cue the mp3 in Virtual DJ while having another deck play a looped intro for example. There are other solutions, especially if you genuinely want to go live.
 
Would I still have to use 2 soundcards if I used 2 computers, because that is probably the best option for me now, because my internet connection on my desktop is very bad, so using my second computer would be better. Also, the skype recorder that someone suggested, is it possible to use it live, so cue the mp3 while it is recording? Thanks

If you plan to use 2 computers (1 for VDJ, 1 for Skype) you have to have 2 sound cards (1 for each computer) because 2 computers can't simultaneously use the same sound card.

1 computers or 2 computers, you'll still need the mixer to combine the channels into one audio stream. I don't recommend buying the cheapest crap even as your first mixer, so here's some mixers I'd recommend (you need at least 3 channels):

Ecler Nuo 3.0
Ecler MAC 40V
Denon DN-X500
Denon DN-X1100

In your situation using Skype recorder sounds very risky, especially if you plan to use 2 computers. You would have to stream a MP3-file that is constantly being updated over local network to VDJ. Recipe for disaster, if you ask me.
 
I got a simple solution. install virtual cables/audio repeaters in your PC or Mac, once installed you'll need to start 3 repeaters. Connect them this way:
First repeater: Line 1 to Line 2.
Second Repeater: Microphone (the mic or line you will be using) to line 2.
And third repeater: Line 1 to Speakers (or headphones or whatever you are using).

In Skype go to tools\options\audio settings\.
in the microphone tab choose whatever mic you want to use for the call. on speakers choose: Line 1.

On VirtualDJ: go to your settings and if you already got a mic connected, just swap the mic you have selected to line 2
