Topic: I need some speakers.

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

So I have been looking at purchasing some speakers and I was trying to decide which is the best way to go about it. Powered or non powered?

No powered, I can get an amp but I am looking at more stuff I have to carry & probably a little bit more money I have to spend. Not only that, amps to to blow and have other issues. Then again I can go with powered and be worried about issues with the amp in the speak and maybe dropping them and then costing me.

Then when I look at it, it is all the same but I do linke having less to carry if i am going to do gigs.

How is it best to have my speakers? On poles, with a sub, or without?

I am ready to spend a few thousand and I am usually really slow at buying big ticket items so I want to make sure I do the right thing before I take the plunge.

Also which brands are best because I am attracted to Peavy, Mackie, CVs and JBLs.

Fill me in on your knowledge.

I have been looking at moving to powered speakers but it will be a while here are a couple I have been looking at

But I am a fan of Peavey speakers and at 1200 watts these have my interest

Depending on the bottom end of either set, if needed I would have a single dual 18" powered sub cab centered between the two that were mounted on poles.

Those were good reviews. So just from the sound of the first video I am needing anywhere from 750 to 1000 wats apiece. So far, good info.

Get Behringer or Mackies.

I've used these at countless of gigs and have been very happy with the tops. I have 4 for big rooms, but usually only need 2 on stands for a room that holds up to 200. I pair the tops with a Mackie SWA1801z portable sub. I've been very satisfied with the results.

I have had most speakers over the years, actually I would have a new system every six months.

After having nearly all of them I decided on my main rig being an RCF setup, 2 x 522's and a pair of 905AS's. Really nice sound!

I have been using Mackie's for quite a few years, I have five 450's and two 1500 subs. I use one as a monitor, but it is also a spare just in case. I go to Vegas and Atlantic City Conventions, and have heard them all. I also have friends that have most of the powered speakers. If I had the money, or needed to upgrade I would go with the QSC KW series. I do the VDJ booth at the conventions, and we used them, and they kicked ass. We have used others in the past, but these are our preferred speakers. Even the 10" versions kick. My next choice would be the RCFs.

I got a pair of 15" Behringer Eurolive powered speakers with cables and stands for 400 dollars. Deal of a lifetime. Just make a list of the speakers you would if you got a great deal and search all of them on Craigslist.

For some reason I feel the need to stay away from Behringers. I am not on that much of a budget.

Then in that case, get Mackie SRM450v2 or QSC KW.

What is the budget? The QSC K12 tops do a great job and pair nicely with the KW181 powered sub. ( not a fan of the K-sub) The other set I could recommend would the newest powered speakers from JBL the PRX 612 and the sub with those would be the PRX 618. Center the sub under your DJ table and run the signal through it's high pass filters out to the mains. ( this is for both setups) I think both are x-ed over at 100hz this way your mains don't blow from trying to reproduce the bass line. The qsc K-sereies was the bang for buck leader for the last year or so but the 600 series JBL's really stepped up compared the 500 series.

I would say if you are on a budget search craigslist. I got an almost brand new set of Yamaha BR12's with a Yamaha emx62 powered mixer for $270 on craigslist. I had to drive an hour and a half 2 get them, so for $300 (including gas for travel cost) I got a nice set of speakers to get started with. Now I'm just saving 2 get a sub 2 go with them. But they were used like 4 or 5 times by a church.

My budget is $1000-$2000

Currently I have, Peavey & Behringer speakers. I use the peavey speakers at cookouts and the Behringers for house parties etc. I have no issues with either. Yes non-powered speakers are allot to carry but either way you look at it if a speaker or an amp goes out you as a DJ should always have a plan B. At ever gig I have all my speakers and an extra amp with me just in case.

I have to agree, can't go wrong with either of these. I listened to both side-by-side in Guitar Center and they are both top shelf. Only reason I went with the Mackie was price, but if thats no option then go QSC!

If you have the ability to transport them I would also look into a pair of JBL PRX635 A great all around speaker with all the crossovers built in. much better than any dual 15" for mid range and no need for a seperate sub. It's almost magic that they are only 60lbs a piece.

OK, debate over, now go get those QSC's and start kicking ass.

You can get the QSK 12's for 699 each http://www.proaudiostar.com/ Call them up for better price. If you want a good powered subwoofer without breaking the bank. Buy the Harbinger HP118s. it kicks 700 watts of bass. I have the QSC Kw181 powered sub and its slightly louder but the harbinger kicks. For 699, you can't go wrong.
