Topic: Upgrading OS and have a couple of questions

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I am running Vista right now and wanting to go to windows 7 but there are a few options:
7 home premium 64 bit
7 home premium 32 bit
7 ultimate 64 bit
7 ultimate 32 bit

I am using all videos to DJ/VJ with and a cheap MP3E2 hercules and a NIAudio 2 DJ sound card right now but have a Denon MC6000 on the way. My current laptop handles my sets well but the CPU meter runs a little higher than I would like and I am worried that the MC 6000 will put even more strain on my CPU leading to freezes or a crash. Reason for upgrading is that I have read that windows 7 handles Midi comands much better than Vista.

So my questions are what version of windows 7 would be best for my laptop? Premium or ultimate and 64 or 32 bit?
What is the difference between 64 and 32 bit (besides 32bits ;0) lol)

These are the specs on my current laptop
Sony VAIO
Vista Home Premium
Centrino Duo T2250 @ 1.73 GHz 1.73 GHz
2 Gigs RAM
32 Bit OS
Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipset Family
2TB EXT HD

If you only have 2gb RAM then there's no point going with a 64bit version. 32bit supports up to 4Gb RAM. Unfortunately your laptop CPU is not that great and will struggle, however the MC6000 does not add to that.

The differences between the versions are detailed on the M$ website but do not affect how VDJ works at all.

There may be some Windows 7 specific drivers on the Vaio support site but most of the current ones should be completely compatible with the new OS.

Note: There has also been a recent hotfix released by Microsoft to improve midi data for Vista / 7, may be worth installing that too.

I am using XP with the MC6000 but that's just personal preference. Windows 7 should work just fine too.

Thanks for the reply Keith,

I will see what happens with my current OS and the MC6000 first, then check out that hot fix you mentioned. If I feel I need to upgrade to W7 I may just look into a new laptop.

To be honest W7 will probably work better than Vista on your current machine.

If you are going to use the MC6000 with Vista, you need to adjust the jog sensitivity timing.

The details of how to do this are detailed on the documentation for the MC6000 firmware upgrade to version 1002. Probably better to update the firmware before you start using it to cure the freeze issue on the originally released firmware.

Thanks Keith, I have been keeping myself up to date with all the fixes to the firmware and hope I can get all this up and running soon after I recieve the MC6k. Kind of scarey because I gig on a regular basis and I do not need extensive down time.

Once you get the MC6000 mapped to your liking it is brilliant. The built in VDJ mapping is a bit weird, and has a lot of features for video FX. I don't do video so have pretty much remapped all the FX buttons and some others and it really is amazing.
