in the topic about video laptops , i noticed that TearEmUp mentioned that some of us video jocks are
firm believers in desktops , not laptops .....
i got curious to see exactly how long it took to setup ......
so it's 7 minutes
in my case that includes connecting to an uninterruptible power supply , an extra step many don't do
and also 2 external drives ,plus the RMX ..... that's taking my time and includes the boot up
so i figure it "costs" me 5 or 6 "extra" minutes ......compared to a laptop setup

You have to consider space too, in a lot of DJ booths I've worked in I've had to unplug and move a CDJ to make room for my laptop let alone a desktop and everything that goes with it.
You mention that you have external drives with your desktop, now I'm really confused, isn't owning a desktop all about having big drives/multiple drives?
I have one 750GB drive in my laptop with everything on it, I think I can add another hd to my machine too I'm looking into it today.

hi Charlie ...
i do own a laptop and although on paper it seems like a reasonable choice it's really not that good
i have it as a back up / for venues where the dj booth is really small / sneeze and something starts playing ......
i always do whatever i can for my device , be it laptop or desktop, to help it succeed .....
so that's why i use externals regardless , i try to use the C: as little as possible by placing the media outboard ....
anyway that's my reasoning / justification
i defrag including boot defrags , clean the registry and manually set restore points , once or twice a week
i am much more interested in how well it runs and how reliable than how small it is
at some point in the near future i will use a setup with onboard multiple drives but only in a RAID configuration
that would be near bulletproof , always boots up , and does incremental backups , basically it would operate
a lot like some servers .....
