Topic: Residency DJ vs Mobile DJ - Page: 2

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Valid points on what people prefer, Residency or Mobile and I honestly feel it is safe to say, "to each his/her own."

Great stuff here, I only wish we had forums like this when I first started, because stuff likes this only furthers my LOVE for the game!

BIG UP 2 ALL MY FELLOW DJ'S!!!

Have done...do both! Club DJ pays less and plays more of the same music. The longer you are at one place the less the crowd is impressed. You have to constantly reinvent yourself to keep it fresh. Not really a bad thing to do. Mobile DJ pays way better and the crowd appreciates your work more. I agree with some of the others, a little of both is good.

I prefer a residency. I love specialization. I like specializing in the genre of music I play and getting to know it well. I like the steady work that I can schedule. As far as the change of pace, back when I was doing this as my primary source of income, I use to have 4 clubs I DJ'd at. Thurs. through Sun. Pay is actually quite good, once you make a name for yourself.

I do both also... it's good money in the mobile gigs... you can start at charging twice as much as you could get at a residency or place with their own sound system.

W'sup DJ Family...

I do both. Honestly, I prefer residency. I get paid pretty well from the clubs that I play at (Average $400 a night x2 nights a week).

As stated by others, the main benefit of a residency is steady money. The other great benefit is that you normally do NOT have to bring your own equipment. Most clubs have their own sound. The better clubs not only have sound, but they also have CDJ's, Mixer and an interface (Usually Serato). The DJ just comes in with their laptop and HD (If their music is on an external).
I primarily play Hip Hop, R&B, Reggae, House and Old School Funk. I can do what I want while in the club. Everything from Hip Hop to James Brown and Al Green.

Mobile is GREAT because I get to show off my equipment. I have very high end sound. I do a good number of cabarets (Large private parties that tickets are sold in advance or one can pay more at the door).
I do all the work myself but I've been doing it for a long time. I have a system of sorts. I can set up 4 double 18 bass cabs, 4 double 15 full range cabs, amps and lights in under 30 minutes. Breakdown time is the same as set up time.
The pay for cabarets is VERY good, better than club pay but it is more work and not steady money.

Cookouts, birthday parties and the like pay about the same as the club.

Weddings pay the best!!!

It's ALMOST a shame. Weddings are the easiest gigs out there yet they pay the most. You don't have to bring killer sound, they don't last long, your not actually DJ'ing for most of the show. Play smooth Jazz while their eating, Get through the Garter toss and the Bouquet toss, Let them take a hour and a half of your time making toasts. You might do about 1 hour of actual DJ'ing then it's over.

I enjoy doing it all.

I do both, but I will not do specialized clubs, IE; all club, rap, house. I love my strip clubs, because I can play everything. My other residency is not a strip club, but can play everything. I cannot play the same music all night. I love my mobile gigs, for the challenge, and the money.
