Ive got a few effects and now a small laser, they work well in standalone mode... BUT
sometimes when i need to stop the dancefloor at partys because its time for speeches and stuff, i wanna control the lights so either the LEDs are all on and laser off, or all off completely...
I would say the best way is to go DMX (insted of simply cutting the power to all the fixtures)
What DMX kit do you use?
Is a desk better than PC??
Opinions please. (Sorry if this has been covered before, but there are some new PC DMX adapters out there and i wanna see if anyone has adopted them yet??)

Get a nice DMX stand alone unit with blackout and a joystick (nice if you have moving heads for followspot effects. ie: lighting up the bride and groom).
I've tried the PC and interface thing, but it takes more work to hook up. Keep it simple. All lights are daisy-chained in series. You might need a terminator for the last unit in the chain. Buy good cables. Carry your DMX booklets for reference. Pre-program as much as possible for generic gigs.

if you have a DMX controller software (elation, light jockey, etc.) program a hot key to give you blackout control.

I am a fan of simple. That said, I don't want anything on my show PC. I use a stand alone Chauvet DMX 55. This unfortunatley is discontinued, but I have had the displeasure of working with a few others. Including the newer Obey 70 and some Elation ones (that I returned). If you can find a DMX 55, buy it. It has the best response, etc out of the 5 I have tested. You will hate any of them until you read the manual though. It is not something you just hop righ on and use.
If you must, the Obey 70 is my second choice and currently the other controler I own.
Good luck.

In case you need to go to something simple and cheap, go for Enttec USB Interface (Open or Pro). Use Freestyler (its free) and the super SBDJ Freestyler Plugin.
In case you have some No DMX lights you can turn them to DMX using something like this
