Is it better to put music on pc hard drive on on a usb hard drive which is best

I have all my files inside the laptop because i dont want to consume more usb ports when its no necessary. I also have an external Hd as a back up. Less Usb consumption is better.

i save on usb external ni way am i keeping 700gig on my laptop.

1 incase it breaks down
2 because itll slow it down
3 my hdd is only 200gig

I have all of my music saved on 3 external hard drives...2 500 GB and 1 TB. Don't like music on my laptop.

Agree with Mad here.. I run multiple drives, but I do this because if something happens to the OS and you need to reformat you dont lose music.. Been bitten by that one in the past.

Def on an external hd with Firewire hookup
I only want the my apple to run the software

Its up to you. I had my music inside 3 laptops, mac & Pc plus i had my music inside externals and many other pc's aswell. Fire wire is good is you are doing music videos. For music, its not going to make a difference. If you really think about, usb 2.0 is good enough because its 480 mps. You really dont need fire wire unless is something like movie production. I do more practical theory than reading.

One things to really consider is, Always have a backup copy of your music.

Programs on one drive, music and videos on four 1TB drives, all internal. Karaoke on one 500g external. Don't use laptops.

this probly a stupid question but i was told that for speed and lantency issues its best to store on your computers hard drive?? is it true?

I have always stored music on my internal HDD. My entire DJ collection is just over 4000 tracks which takes up 32Gb. Some people have tens of thousands of tracks taking up hundreds of gigabytes but for me with the low amount of music it makes sense to use the internal HDD.

I personally think internal is best as long as you have the music and your VDJ database / playlist / history files backup elsewhere.

I do generally 5 hour gigs @ 20 tracks per hour = 100 tracks per gig. My collection has no fillers or album tracks and I delete tracks I never play after they have been in the charts. Also the DB is accurately managed. A lot of people probably don't even know what songs they have and may have many duplicates.

Obviously there are different types of DJ's out there and with storage being so cheap it is perfect for keeping loads of music, especially if you play video which takes up a lot more space.

What would be nice is a laptop with 2 drive bays, one SSD for the system and one HDD for storage but not many have that at present.

step one - don't hijack threads. bad form.

step two - itunes sucks. ditch it. and get better and more current music subscription services that will have all the remixes you're going to want that are not available on itunes.

step three - if you're talking about itunes playlists transfering to vdj playlists, then i have to ask the question - why?? think about it for a minute.

original thread - internal hard drives best, usb/firewire for back up. and for transfer/latency then definitly internal hard drive.

Agreed: --> original thread - internal hard drives best, usb/firewire for back up. and for transfer/latency then definitly internal hard drive.
(and yes, jsut as AMAHM said, don't use a laptop) (Na Na Na Na to all you lappy users)

well na na na na isn't very adult Renee'....harumph

but it was damn funny

gentlenumbs ? why do you fart around with wimpy laptops ??

desktops are less portable , but superior in every other way

in an effort to make my C: last longer (by doing less work) i put my music and video

on externals , one for music one for video

all argument will be rendered invalid soon - look for solid state drives to replace those bulky drives really soon as their prices drop

+/-250mbs read/write speeds

Up to 3Gbps Data Transfer Rate

that'll do ya till the next big thing rolls around.

I keep my OS and 30G of music on my laptop. All vids on a 1TB external and all Karaoke on a 1TB external. You know you will always play music at a gig (hence the internal), play vids when the the club has that availability (external), and karaoke when that need arises (external). This to me is more a personal choice and less a performance issue. And without a question, everything backed up a minimum of two other places!
