Topic: Keeping in beat VDJ7?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi Folks,

I just purchased the new Hercules 4-MX unit and so far so good. Its a good jump for Hercules into the professional market and the unit is well put together and easy to adapt to.

With the unit came VDJ7 LE and ive been using a trial period of the pro features which is about to expire.

I want to upgrade to PRO however one issue is cuasing me some concern and i appreciate any advice that you all can give.

Sometimes i notice that the beat is dropping out from a totally accurate sync and i need to use the jog wheels to bring it back into line again.
With some tracks it then stays on beat for a while and then drifts slightly off again.

Im simply using the SYNC buttons on the 4-MX, but im wondering with the CONFIG options etc are there certain things with PRO version that i must change, adapt to correct this? From what i can see i have set up the config correctly.

I hear beatlock and other terms mentioned but cannot find configuration options for these?

Is it just the case that certain tracks will be like this and i have to make do or is there a more accurate way?

There are always certain tracks that wont go together no matter what, but i want to ensure that i have more configuration options set up correctly to ensure the most accurat beat matching and sync mixing at all times.

Appreciate your views folks. Its a minefield lol. It may be a case that i need to configure 2 to 3 things to adapt?

Cheers

Simon.

there have been issues before with pitch drift not sure if thats your issue. if your not using any external cdjs or tts them its not the pitch on them being off.

now with that being said

isn't djing about BEAT matching, scratching, cutting etc. too many "dj's" rely on the program to match the beats, mix the tracks etc. this is one major reason vdj isn't taken seriously in the professional industry. and i'm not talking about bedroom/hobby djs i'm talking touring, club. artist, radio djs. i ALWAYS get the "wow you use VDJ why?" question when other professionals see what i'm working with.

How old are you Simon, and how long have you been DJing?

The simple fact is that, before drum machines and music being sequenced on computers, songs used to be recorded using actual musicians playing their instruments live, without any click track (gasp!).

Live drummers are only human, so even the best will vary up and down slightly.

Other reasons why the tempo may wander are:

Deliberate tempo changes were used to give 'feel' to the track.
It was recorded on a tape machine.
It's been badly edited.

Programs like VDJ always work on the principle that a song only has one, fixed tempo - which is unfortunate, but that's computers for you!

You'll notice on a song that has a 'live' tempo, the CBG will not completely align to the drum beats.

Two simple solutions...

Learn to mix properly! In cases like this you'd need to 'ride the mix' and adjust when necessary.

Use the warping feature of Ableton Live to straighten out the tempo and lock it down to a fixed BPM.
