Topic: hercules 4-mx???

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

im thinking about purchasing one of these little beauties but thought i should seek some advice first

being that im a bedroom dj?

i want to get rid of my desktop pc and just use my laptop. my setup at the moment is 2 timecode vinyl via maya 44 pci card and a hercules mps e2.

now i know whats better and what the recomendations are for pro use, but i was thinking? should i buy the herc 4-mx or just go buy a usb soundcard and keep what ive got?

my laptop is actually a netbook (hp 210 mini 1014sa, 2 gig ram upgrad,, atom n450 1.66)

i was planning to overclock it but as it happens its not possible "yet"

anywho

back to the point, im not sure the netbook will cope with the external hdd, herc mp3 e2 and usb sound card whilst running vdj. would it be better to just run the herc 4-mx and hdd?

EDIT:

if i buy the 4-mx, do i get VDJ7 with it and also can it take 4 decks? or would i still need another sound card to connect 4 decks? oh and is there actually much difference control wise between the 4-mx and the mp3 e2?

would it suffice to buy

8in - 8out soundcard
vdj7
???

would it be better/cheaper?

man i hate decsisions
would the 4-mx take any of the weight off the processor?

i know i can make maybe £100sih back off my mp3 e2 and pci soundcard.

any advice will be great, thanks.

The 4-Mx comes with VirtualDJ LE v7 and supports 4 deck mixing (There is a button on each side to toggle between the decks.)

Unlike the MP3e2 it has a built-in 4-in/4-out ASIO sound card that can also be used for timecode in the full VirtualDJ Pro. However, the computer above may be a bit too slow for timecode use and low latency audio.

Overclocking is not recommended - This may result in the computer overheating and crashing.

You can upgrade from 4-Mx VirtualDJ LE to the full VirtualDJ Professional at a discount: http://www.virtualdj.com/buy/index.html

The 4-Mx is bigger than the MP3e2 and can also be optionally rack mounted.

i do have a full size laptop with a dual core and 3 gig ram, but its kinda broke at the moment.

can i ask how 4 decks are connected to the system then or would it be a matter of only using the 4-mx and 2 timecodes? i really like the idea of hooking up all 4 timecodes.

the mp3e2 can be mounted also it has screw holes in the sides. i made some custom mounts for mine

The internal sound card is used in master and headphones mode.

You can choose which decks you want on the left/right side of the controller via the deck selection buttons on the console, then use the volume sliders and/or crossfader as normal to control which decks play out live.

The decks can be pre-listened to by using the PFL buttons.

have i got this right?

there are 4 inputs on the rear of the mx4 (2 sets of phono) ?

is each port 1 channel?

so you can have either 2 sets stereo inputs or 4 sets mono ?

i also noticed it has 4 sets outputs, 2 sets phono and 2 sets jacks can you pleasetell me why this is?

ive just dowbloadedthe user manual so hopefully ill know a bit more about it soon.

ive had a read of the user manual and still dont see how 4 decks can be used.

ido like the idea of the outputs however. monitors and mains. though from what i read it seems if you plug in headphones into the front then the monitor option switches to phones not speakers.

not that thats a problem. im just really confused as to how the whole 4 deck thing works with it. i totally understand the switching i just dont understand the connection.

There are 4 (2 stereo) inputs on the back, which allows it to be used for timecode. There are also 4 outputs (2 stereo)

For 4 deck mixing, you use it in master + headphone mode - Speakers are connected to the master outputs on the back and headphones into the headphone socket

It is a MIDI controller and controls VirtualDJ's internal software mixer. VirtualDJ's internal mixer deals with mixing the 4 decks.

this is what im thinking, and please correct me if im wrong.

use 2 - 1 phonos to connect the 4 decks to the 4 inputs and then the speakers phones etc.. to the outputs.

i get the outputs but not the inputs.

i dont see how i can connect 4 sets of phonos to 2 sets of inputs unless it went stereo to mono then a mono to stereo conversion took place within the unit or software for the outputs.

it seems to me as though i would still need extra inputs from somewhere to connect timecode 3 and 4. hence why i was debating on an 8in 8out usb card and vdj7 or the herc 4 mx.

headphones hold no interest to me at the moment im afraid. so headphone mode is a bit off topic. seeing as theyre an output and all.

There are two inputs (4 sockets in total), which is sufficient to connect two turntables for control of the left and right decks.

This mirrors the console itself, which also controls the left/right decks by MIDI (You can toggle between 1 & 3 on the left and 2 & 4 on the right.)

forgive me if im thick as pig swill and twice as claggy, buy how can a unit that only has connections for 2 timecode inputs, control 4 decks?????? there is no midi sockets on the unit so what does midi have to do with it?

would i need an extra sound card or something to connect a third and fourth deck?

jp please please just forget how the controller controls the software and how the unit is a midi controller.............oh FFS??? i just worked it out......

the controller is 2 decks and the timecodes is 2 decks which in total is 4 decks?

the controller controlls decks 1 and 2 and the timecodes control decks 3 and 4?

so therefore the software depicts 4 decks in the way of 2 for the controller and 2 for the timecodes?

so therefore if i wanted to use how i wanted

2 cdj's
2 TT's
1 4ch mixer
1 controller

then i would be better off with an 8in 8 out card to connect the TT's and CDJ's to my computer. however does the vdj software allow that? or is it limited to only 2 TC's and 1 controller as inputs for the 4 decks?

i hope you see where my confusion came from?

The 4-Mx is a USB MIDI controller that interfaces with VirtualDJ directly and controls the internal software mixer, allowing 4 deck mixing. It does not need MIDI sockets.

As stated above, there are buttons on the controller to choose which decks are assigned to the left and right side.

If you are using two timecodes with VirtualDJ Pro, then these will also control the assigned left and right decks. The sound card on the 4-Mx has enough inputs for two turntables (Left and right decks.)

For 4 separate turntables you would need a separate sound card with 8 inputs.

not sure if you got to read my whole post above so thought id give it a bump

NOTE: For timecode use, you will need to purchase the full VirtualDJ Pro v7.0.2: http://www.virtualdj.com/buy/index.html - The 4-Mx gives you a considerable discount off the cost of upgrading to VirtualDJ Pro.

yup, im just trying to work out exactly what i want for the use its going to get. i am now toying with the idea of buying a steel or rmx instead which will be cheaper and leave me some cash for my upgrade to pro. as the rmx/steel will do the same job yet save me some money.

i sincerely thought the 4-mx would allow me to connect 4 TC's and use the mx as a mixer, effects unit and sound card all in one.

ooh, can you elaborate on that please jp? this sounds intreaguing

hey i also have and hp 210 and i recently put vdj limited edition on it but it says that the controller was not detected i have a hercules rmx that works on my desktop but not on my net book any ideas why this would happen or did it happen to you?

Hi babe. Im not sure either the RMX or the 4MX can run 4 decks SIMULTANIOUSLY... Both controllers give the option to TOGGLE between decks not run them at the same time!!!
.....Whats the point, i ask myself!!!
.....How many decks do we need if they are just used for lining up the next tune?

....Instead ov lining 1 track up we can line up 3!!!
....AND...?

im still not sure what the benefit is???

When used in master + headphones mode, both the 4-Mx and RMX can output 4 decks simultaneously to your speakers.

But you can only control two of those decks at any one time. You can toggle between them on the fly with the selection buttons on the 4-Mx, or appropriately mapped buttons on the RMX.
