I recently got an Akai LPD8, which I've set up with a lot of cool functionality. I've looked through the XML file and understand what's all going on there, and I added lots of cool little buttons to toggle various modes. My problem is that the LPD8 doesn't seem to support MIDI in to allow for programmable LED toggles.
I got the idea to possibly build an box that just houses a few LEDs, which I could label and using midi signals toggle on and off. This would be my end goal, but I'm not really sure where to go from here. I have no idea what I would have to make to accept MIDI signals and use them to turn on and off particular LEDs. Could an off-the-shelf solution do this?
Which brings me to my next thought, which is that this will obviously take some time to come up with and construct, so in the mean-time I still need some way to tell if my toggles are active or not. Would it be possible to do this with some software? Perhaps even VDJ itself? These are custom "modes" that I made using variables, so I can't just toggle a skin object.

Doesn't have to be an on/off toggle, you can do some advanced things using panels. You can also use VDJScript in textzones to display information too.
