Topic: gain problem +.7.5 db and still too low

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hello,

I love VDJ and almost the only problem I have currently is with gains when playing music videos.
I have videos from lots of different sources and different file types. While playing it's like every 15th video which have gain far to the right (+7.5 db but still too low compared to other songs).

I have gain mapped
to a knob on my controller but moving it far to the right does not help because it is already at maximum.
I have tried also power_gain but the problem is that it is not relative. So when moving power_gain knob it may cause sudden low peak or loud fuzz if the knob is at wrong position. Changing volume of the deck helps but volume I always forgot to change the volume back to normali leves, so suddenly every song on the other deck comes louder.

I have used auto and auto+remember for gain settings but neither one solves my problem. Auto+ remember is better since it remembers my chances but I get new videos all the time and when playing some video at gig for the first time I may get this problem.

I have few suggestions how to fix the problem:

1) change the maximum of 7.5DB higher (is it already possible from registry?)
2) make a new script power_gain_slider (same as gain_slider but for the power gain to avoid sudden volume peaks)

My current mapping for gain knob is "var $shift ? power_gain : gain_slider"
It's ok but not perfect.

BUMP!

Another option is to disable auto gain (use remember) and use script ""var $shift ? nothing : power_gain""

So when pressing shift I can turn knob to right position without volume peaks.

Any other ideas?

I will buy a MC-6000 conroller soon, perhaps it solves the problem with external mixer section. Now I use vci-300.

Hi Jaakko

Perhaps re-processing the most troublesome files using an editing software could help. If you can re-process the audio track to a more usable level to start with this would reduce the need to make large gain changes.

The gain problems are usually on some retail dvds and also on some screenplay dvds. I *could* reproduce some dvds but it is just too time consuming, I would like to be able to fix gain on the fly because it's the easiest way to do it. Also reprocessing may vanish my cue points and tags.

I still would need a decent answer for this. Is max db configurable already or will there be a new script for this?

Are all of these tracks the same bit rate? Constant, variable? Mp3, wav, flac? In other words, are these tracks the same format, quality?

If you are raising the gain, you are most certainly introducing distortion.
If your volume is insufficient, you need more power, software gain is not the answer.

Gain or trim that raises volume levels in mixers is done with pre amplification which is different.

The auto setting is going to normalize the track volumes to -0-db so they are all the same volume level.
If you start changing that with remember, its going to do just that which personally I do not believe is a good thing to mess with.

You have not indicated what you have for a sound system yet, so that would be my first question, the second would be the size of the venue and the third would be the crowd size.
Those are very important variables in having the right combination to sound good.

Finally, nearly all store bought dvd's are normalized and need not be altered, and Screenplay for one has a tendency to be a bit hotter than Promo and store bought dvd's.

IMO, you need a better sound system.
