I know Windows XP Professional 32 bit only supports up to 3 GB and I am certain Vista 64 will support 4 but not sure about Vista 32. Just Google "How many gigs of ram can Vista Support" How many are showing up?

(EDIT)
It will use all 4 gigs just not report it. To see it you have to look in your BIOS..................

exactly what i did on the train on the way back home.its sorted.once in bios, you run some tests and it shows under computer,blah,blah...ha,ha...now this lappys running good, now to fix the decks from switching to cd mode.

32bit OS will not read 4 GB of ram. Its usually 3 point something. 64bit OS will. I have the same issue with my Toshiba 32bit OS with Vista and 4 GB of ram installed.

Humm thats strange..Cause I got it working and yes this is Vista 32 bit.Again its in the Bios...I now got the full 4 gigs and my inspirion never been Happier!...

Yup just like I SAID it will work just look in the BIOS.................
