Is there any script out there that can have this set to say, 50% like the individual channels? It's a little annoying to have to keep dropping it back to 50%. This will help greatly with distortion and recording playback.

You can assign a keyboard shortcut to master_volume 50%
You can also add an initiation string to a skin to make this happen on startup, but it doesn't seem to be working .......

Yeah, I mean, that's good and all (keyboard shortcut) but if the gains are at 50% on startup, why can't master volume be at 50% also? I used ALT+V but still, everything else saved (effects, samples)...definitely not complaining, just hoping for a fix

I always leave my master at 100% and it sounds fine.
Alternatively you can ajust your sound card volume in Windows at 50% and it will achieve the same thing and stay that way.
