Hi guys, I had a question about lighting. If some of you read my first post(new to the djing world...) which was a few days ago. would know my situation.I'm new to Djing and i'm barely making ends meet. I know that I shouldn't even be talking about or thinking about this yet since i'm just starting out and shouldn't be doing any type of giging right now. But I have a light pack that I got when I got my gig set up its the American Dj festive light pack 2 it was 99 bucks and it came with a plastic strobe, multi color rotating slow ball, and a multi colored moonflower2 but when I hooked everything up it. they seamed to not have enough coverage ,any ideas to add one more to it, to have it a little wider coverage. right now i'm using pole clamps on my speaker stands to hang the moon flower and the strobe so i don't have a light fixture maybe later down the road. I was looking at the american dj aggressor multi color light for hundred bucks.
thank you
steve
you can see my set up on youtube. its under steve702

I have been through my fair share of lights through out the years and the one I have purchased that I feel have gave me the most bang for my buck are:
Martin Raptors (my favs)
American DJ Roto Balls
American DJ Star Ball
American DJ Reflexs (not to great but they still work)
all listed above with the exception of the reflex can and have ran for countless gigs at 4 hours or more a pop. I have only had to replace bulbs in my Roto Balls.
other than that I have a large christmas tree plastic box full of other lights, fogers bubblers form american DJ that are unuseable.
Look into the newer LED lighting effects they use much less power and have no duty cycle and the fixtures will weigh less as well. Get a T bar to hang your lights from it will help give you better projection to the dance floor of the venu.

Hey,
You get for what you pay for - sort of. What I mean is generally the better stuff costs much more. But that said I have an ADJ Revo 1 moonflower. Can't remember what It cost about £60-70 if i remember rightly. I went down to a local shop who I've always considered to sell tat, and picked up a Skytec moonflower for less than £30. Both have microphones to react to music, but the ADJ Revo has DMX, and the Skytec doesn't.
The Skytec moonflower is at least as bright, but I think it may even be slightly brighter, I was pretty impressed to be honest. For £30 it's great for shining into the corners, or the roof. Originally I used it as a lighting feature on the dancefloor.
If you're just starting out, and experimenting with lights, then to be honest, I'd not be overly concerned with DMX input as it's one more thing to worry about. I'd recommend going for presence in the room, set the lights on a couple of stands and let them do their thing.
As for the ADJ Aggressor, I have one of these, and they are really bright. Fantastic for filling a room. The angle of spread I would say (and this is a guess) is about 150-160degrees left to right and about 40degrees top to bottom. It's very bright as well. My biggest problem with the aggressor is there is no input for a controller so you can't black out the thing, but the newer one ADJ Dekker has DMX in it.
Also, depending on the type of mood the event has, I've used a couple of £30 colour changing pin spots, and fired them into an opening between chairs/sofas so the area inbetween the people changes colour. I only did it because the weather forced us inside so there was no room for the glitterball. It created a nice chill area for guests to watch the dancing.
I guess what I'm saying is, that like DJing itself, you don't need to have lots of super-expensive kit, as long as you are creative enough to use what you do have to the best it can be used.
And
Lights are fun, even cheap ones. If you're not looking for anything too magical then its a matter of thinking how you can incorporate them into a gig.
PS: I now tend to look for "equivalent to 250watt halogen bulb" type phrases on the boxes/product descriptions etc as I know it'll fill the venues in my local area
Hope that helps!
Olly

thanks guys for the help I believe I still have time to return the light kit. probably will have to pay for the shipping back. so from a hundred dollar kit minus the shipping to NY it will probably cost me 30 so i'll end up with 70 bucks out of the whole thing and no lights so should i just keep it and build on to it?

That depends on how much cash you have spare tbh. I'd keep it, but invest in a stand first, then see where your gigs take you. I'd not feel bad about it though, not at all! Does it really matter? The multi-coloured ball and the moonflower look pretty funky (from what I saw on your youtube vid in the garage)!
I'd keep it and then build on what you've got, some lights are better than no lights, yeah?
PM me or reply here if you need further info

Besides the many other lights/effects I have...I always drag along my Equinox Cobra's - http://www.djkit.com/product.php?id=6677&highlight=cobra - even when playing clubs...they are not DMX (S2L only) but offer a massive beam spread and are LED, so no duty cycle and at £62 each are a bargain.
You can stand mount them, or, as I mostly do, just put them on some speaker bins.

Go LED! All my lights are now LED and DMX. Loving it!
No expensive bulbs to replace and some are very comparable to 250W Halogen output.
My newest lights: VIZI LED Spots - You can also make custom gobos to go in these.
