As far as you want...

I DJ only using laptops and have just finished my 10 gig using VDJ as my backup software...

Since I been using another software for the pass 10 years it is a little hard to let go of an old friend...

I can mix and do a lot of effect with the older software but found that VDJ is way easier on all points...

I have been practicing a couple of hours per night so that I can feel better and it has worked...

Last night I found myself using VDJ over my RED 5.2. About 80 percent of the time...

So to answer your question: Practice and setup your keyboard the way you like but be careful not to assign letters for effect because you will need those to find songs...

I have also remove a few f keys effects and tried to keep it simple...

I'm sure you'll won't have a problem but whatever you do do it before you go on live...

Practice but have fun...

:)

There are many successful djs just using a mouse and keyboard. Having used vinyl then cds, then controllers, I prefer using Technics 1200s and vinyl timecodes but I am old and I just like to look like an old school dj ;)

As long as your gear is reliable, its how you rock the crowd, not what you use to do it - unless you are just playing someone elses mix tape and then you get NO RESPECT!!!

If you learn all the keyboard shortcuts, I'm pretty sure you can DJ just as well as anybody. The main problem is using the faders, but you can make shortcuts to instantly crossfade and other ones for when you want a slow fade.

A controller makes it much easier to learn though. And you can do 2 things at once with some real buttons and faders in front of you.

How far can you go, depends on what you are measuring. I'm 58 years old, and have been doing this for 42 years. I have not used vinyl since 1990, started using PCDJ when it came out, and have been strictly Virtual DJ for the last six years. I only do video gigs, because anybody and everybody can do just music. I am making more money now and doing fewer gigs. I have a great mobile business, and usually do three lounge gigs a week. I have experienced some age discrimination in the last two years, but still continue to get some club gigs. Now, I lie about my age, to get the job. I have never had a problem with the tools that I use. My final product is all my clients are concerned with. I do not give a shit what some other DJ thinks of me. Do you know what tools the chef is using in the kitchen? Do you care? Actually, I used to cook in a hospital kitchen. Do you want to know what goes on in a kitchen? I don't think so.

ahaha thats a classic AMAHM answer...respect.ahahahha lmao as far as the topic...i did it..i djed in japan with only my laptop..i had my entire keyboard mapped out so no matter how tipsy i am i know what to do ..and it comes 2nd nature after a while so the answer is yeah u can do it..i still have all my equipments and controllers but im really really at home when i mix with laptop /keyboard lol

How far depends on you. If you are very creative, then you would go further. I am an Old school dj and been in the game for 25 years. My choice of equipment is Technics 1200's and Two Denon 3700's. I like getting creative on the jog wheels.

Just a keyboard and a crossfader, but could have easily be done without a crossfader but with cue points instead

lie about your age (for clubs) , age doesn't seem to matter for mobil , age is a plus for strip clubs

be a salesmen first

have an edge over Brand X .....video works , so does FireText

posturing for other DJ's ?? doesn't pay the bills and is pointless in every way..... you wimps

i dont own a lapout, sorry :p

Well, I've bought this program a few months ago, and I have been making House Music Mix CD's with it ever since. Just a kayboard and a mouse. made a macro to make the cut after each track, and I am on a roll.

Hell, soon, You may be hearing me on Internet Radio!!

Now I do have to familiarize myself with timecode vinyls and CD's. My brother has Serato and Does parties with two technics 1200's and timecodes. I am of the mood to try the Pioneer CD decks.

But I'm really liking the functionality of the keyboard and mouse, now that I'm familiar with it.
