... randomly bisectlng it...This is a very serious problem for me which is making Virtual DJ more or less unusable. Anybody have a fix for this?
Anyone else have this problem? This happens to ALL of my videos which are in .dv format and play fine (with no lines) in Quicktime and they play fine out of Modul8 (w/ no lines). This is a very serious problem for me which is making Virtual DJ more or less unusable. Anybody have a fix for this? I have a gig tonight and might just have to do it all in Modul8.

Please do not write 'books' for titles.
Thank you.

What encoding options did you choose?
Why DV format?
What ripping software are you using?
A little more information would be helpful ...

<<What encoding options did you choose?>>
"dv stream" in iMovie- there are no options, really just PAL or NTSC
<<Why DV format?>>
I figured that would be the best quality
and because there were no encoding options I figured it was foolproof
<<What ripping software are you using?>>
iMovie/Quicktime
I input video into iMovie and export it
<<A little more information would be helpful ...>>
thanks - could you suggest a codec/encoding option that you think would work better?

I would look into using Handbrake. It is the best reviewed in the Mac community and provides way more control over the process.

NTSC

Well, I'm not sure there's anything wrong with my files. As I said they play fine in Modul8 for instance. And straight out of Quicktime. So I'm not exactly sure what I need Handbrake for. Quicktime has a lot of different encoding options. Like I said, I picked .dv because I thought it would be the best quality and I wouldn't have to worry about the options. You can encode things in all the different formats and with all the different encoding options with quicktime. What I'm looking for is for someone to suggest an actual codec/encoding options that they think will work better than my .dv files.

what kind of mac do you have?

Do these lines appear randomly and it gets worse if the video changes scenes fast? If you say yes it's called flicker and there is nothing you can do about it. Search for my posts about it. I gave up on the subject since nobody here believes it's there, but you see it, it's there. The good thing it's the audience don't notice it, everyone congratulates me on the quality of my video show so don't worry too much. I would really like if this flicker gets fixed on a future release of VDJ since VLC had the same problem and now it practically does not have it, so something can be done about it. How do we know it's software and not hardware, easy, VDJ bootcamped on the same machineS do not present this flicker.
For the ones that do want to see this flicker real easy, try watching AC/DC Thunderstruck video it flickers like mad.

That sounds like it. It happens mostly when there's a lot of quick movement and close-ups. I just spoke to tech support on the phone and they took me pretty seriously, it seemed, and acknowledged that this was an issue on the Mac version. He said there's a new version coming out in a couple weeks maybe that might have a fix for it.
Glad to hear someone else knows what I'm talking about on this issue. Everyone's been telling me I'm encoding my media wrong, when that same media plays fine in like 3 other VJ programs and Quicktime. Also nice to hear that audiences don't notice. I actually did a gig on Sat night w/ no complaints, but it does still bother me... This problem should be fixable on a $300 program when a free program like Cellulo plays my videos perfectly.

Come to think of it the guy on the phone said they had had a similar complaint from a guy from Mexico, probably you, right?
Posted Tue 07 Sep 10 @ 1:55 pm
can you do a quick test? Do the lines go away when the mac is unplugged from power?

it does- not as bad but I think this is what's happening

I never complained over the phone, just posted it here, so maybe be me. But there is nothing wrong with your media, get a PC see for yourself, no flicker on VDJ. I used to VJ on a PC so it did bothered me a lot, MAC users in a desing studio that I manage swear by the Mac and said it could not be, I just took them to the meeting room and used the proyector there pointed the flicker and they went mute. Maybe people don't care for it because they don't know the videos as I am sure we do, so every frame that misses or changes something we noticed it, but the rest seems like they don't care. Still I hope they fix this flicker.

You have the same Mac that I have ...
Go to the Energy Saver settings and put it in Higher Performance mode .. this will kick in the 9600M GT chipset and will run a lot better for video

Just to clarify the flicker issue, I only run in high performance settings using the 9600M. This of course increases performance a lot, but has nothing to do with the flicker issue. I have no performance issues to mix videos in anyway for any period of time.
