It takes a long ass time though for me. Files are mpeg1 with #1DVDRipper and VP6.

Not sure what exactly I did but the results are pretty good.
I set this up with vp6 before I realized it wasn't able to produce mpeg1 (so I was told).
However, the program may default to a generic codec bypassing the vp6 all together.
I am not totally convinced based on the quality I am getting.
These are the original settings I used, I now bump up the resolution to 640x480 I think, not in front of it.

File sizes are between 80 and 100mb and a PO disc takes about 4 hours to rip.
This is all trial and error, rip one and look at it compared to the dvd copy.
The copy has been so good I have second guessed it and found the same flaws on the original disc much to my surprize.

First install the VP6 codec on your machine.
www.on2.com
Then install #1 DVD ripper.

Create your folders.

Open Ripper and set up your tabs.

General:
Volume at 3. for most DVDs.
Output frame rate, 29.97 (NTSC)
Deinterlace, none
Split mode, Infinate
Check boxes 1 & 4

Output tab:
Video format, MPEG 1
Video codec, VP6 Hightened sharpness
Configure Button,
General: 3191 Bitrate
Mode, Two pass - Second pass - Best Quality
Usage, Local, VBR
Material, Progressive
NR, Off
Auto Key frame, Checked
Max key Frames, 360

Advanced, leave set with defaults

Settings, Two Pass- Second Pass - Local File Playback

click Save and Ok

Resolutioon 480X320
Output Directry, Where you wish toe rip to go

Misc:
Temporary Buffer, 200mb/Ram
special optimization, select your processor
Select shutdown if you want and use ASPI to access.

Size/Bitrate:
Lame @192
Bitrate for VCD, Video 3191, Audio 224

Click OK
Settings on the lower end of ripper are defaulted.

Click 1st icon to load DVD tracks to ripper and
the lightning bolt to start ripping.

Rick,

I am trying your codec. Installed it but can't get the program to recognize. Even tried reinstalling. Any hints?

The program should detect it in setup/config.
Did you pay for vp6 which is now vp7 I guess?

I just downloaded the codec which was free. Shows in my control panel but not in the dvd ripper program.

Rick, how are you ripping that quickly with #1DVD Ripper with VP6? It takes me a friggin day to rip one disc with a P4 3.0, 2 gigs ram, 16X DVD.

Also, I didn't go over the settings you listed here but are you using the settings given over at DJ Chat? That's what I am using.

The settings I list here is what I use.
The settings on chat are dj Jef's and all I got were errors using his.

Set it up with these and try it.

Any raw source file is going to sound and look better uncompressed.
However......when you currently own 5k tracks building by 150 more each month, space is more of a concern.
A PO disc is nearly 8g on the disc, after I eliminate the intro tracks, the ambients and the ones I clearly will never play I wind up with a folder that is 3.5g, you call it.

As far as the quality lost in compression, there is little that is noticiable.
I discover more imperfections that I question and then find on them on the original disc then ones I create with compression.
The quality issues associated with technology of the 70's and 80's material is also something that can't be helped.
It looks just as shitty as a vob as it does compressed.

My only beef with my rips is some contrast line pixelation when solid whites meet solid darker colors and it is only momentary so I live with it.

The last point worth making is this:
This is not HD surround sound movie theatre, so don't let yourself think it isn't good enough for the party.
They dance and glance and that is the sign it is working.
They aren't not staring and criticizing every inperfection, they are just happy to see the artists doing the original tracks particularly the classics in any genre, listen for the ooh's and aah's when the track starts.

Try different codecs and formats (1 vs 2 vs 4 avi divx), then do one track of each, then compare size and quality for yourself.
If you have the PO All Time Party Classics, there are plenty of video challenges on there that will help you see the difference.
If you use current material you may not see the difference quite as easy.

I disagee with rick (he sucks) Just kidding.

Vantine the biggest advantage is time which personally is more important to me then disc space. The second advantage is quality. As I do video for a living professionaly I can't stand anything less than perfect video. The final advantge is sound quality. 96 promo dvd's would be around 768 gigs. Ripping at 10 minutes per disc and not having to worry about screwy codec's is priceless in my opinion.

Weeeee........here we go!

So when you see jumping, latency, and pixelation in the vob, you KNOW it will be better quality jumping, latency and pixelation than if you ripped and compressed the dvd.

Jason,
You have seen and comented positively on my rips, so which is it?

And don't forget the back up drives we all have to have, so 1500 gigs should just about do it for starters or until PO stops sending dvds every month, did I get that right?

And I don't suck, don't even hang with that crowd.
