Topic: lessons learned, WD Scorpio Blue 500

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

So, wasn't sure if I should just add this to some other threads I have posted on but....

My new 13in pro 250 gig HDD, had it about 2 weeks. I gigged with it last weekend and could not be happier. During this past week I upgraded the HDD to the Western Dig Scorpio blue 500 5400RPM from best buy. Installed everything, updates, copied music, vdj, all set. Tried it out for a few minutes and had no problems. Well I gigged with it last night and oh boy.

So i start VDJ and play a song. walk away, come back 2 mins later to load another deck and boom the screen freezes. Takes 2 seconds, then the track actually "drops in" and loads. I figure this is odd, bring the trusty old 13 in white online which was ready to go...restart the pro...still have same issue.

In the meantime the audio does NOT stop so I am good. I dig online when I get home last night. It seems there an issue with this HDD and mac osx. Various forums and you see people with same issue (only they do not use vdj, they are just browsing, etc)...other people however have no issues so its a crapshoot. I search long and hard, people with the problem "cure" it by using a HDAPM program which disables the head parking/power savings that the WD HDD uses...I do this and Voila, no more issue. The downside is that the HDD never sleeps, even when you close the lid...only way is to shut the comp all the way off. So its a temp fix but I am looking for a better HDD. I would like to stick with the 5400 I really dont feel I need the 7200. Oddly, the same HDD was used in my mac white with no issue, although the firmware is a bit older so it seems its a mix of firmware, mac os, probably the sata controller, even the different logic boards?

So...two things, the original HDDs in both the pro and white were Hitachi. Does anyone use an upgraded Hitachi HDD in a newer...like very new Pro? If so, how is it?

Two...let this be a lesson once again, if you make any changes be it Ram, HDD's, a new external HDD that you try it out for a good few hours at home doing beta tests....luckily I always have the white as a backup with the same music, but god forbid I did the upgrade on both, went to gig, same issue :(

Do yourself a favor and test your stuff before you gig :)

I have the 17" MBP, 2.66Ghz, 2009 model. I got a Hitachi 500GB 7200RPM HTS725050A9A364 drive from Frys electronics for $64. It was a really good deal, so i took the chance on it.

I've had it for two months now, and it hasn't failed me yet. I use my computer almost constantly, so i've put it through the paces.

Prior to this drive, i had a Seagate Momentus 500GB fail on me in about three weeks, just like what happened to you. But these tiny hard drives are apparently hit or miss. Some people have had great experience with them, and others (like us) have had terrible ones.

I am going to try the Seagate (understanding your post...)...Best Buy is willing to exchange the WD Scorpio for me even though I have used the WD...can't say no to that. You are totally right...its hit or miss with drives.

installed the seagate, seems much better. still a little sluggish but i attribute that to the fact the spotlight is indexing 300 gigs of music...
