Topic: Control VirtualDJ via an iPad

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Has anyone tried setting up a way to control VirtualDJ through a wireless device such as an iPad? We want our DJ to be mobile throughout the club and carrying a laptop or pc doesn't seem very practical not to mention hooking the video feed to the house system is impossible.

It is possible using iteleport or a similar VNC app to either PC or Mac.

I currently use VNC on my Vaio U50 and UX1 tablets, but if you're running windows then RDP is a better option.

I'm just waiting for the ipad to be back in stock and I'll post how it works. Should in theory be OK but I've only tested with the ipod touch to date.

OK,

I have tried controlling VDJ on the ipad through iteleport from a 17" Macbook Pro and it works fine.

You can either lower your screen res to 1024 x 768 or keep it at 1920 x 1200 and just zoom in.

The refresh rate is not brilliant, but the developers are working on improving it over wifi.

Bottom line is that you can control VDJ on an ipad through VNC. I will do some more testing and try it live in the club next weekend.

Any questions put them here and I'll do my best to reply.

Done some testing and I'm confident enough to try it live.

I will answer any specific questions but the basics are that I'm using the iteleport app to VNC in to the 17" Macbook Pro over wifi running 1920 x 1200 and using the VDJ6 skin in 1920 x 1200 resolution. This will work perfectly well in Windows too.

The iteleport app "shrinks" this down to 1024 x 768 on the ipad but it's perfectly workable. You can also zoom up to full res and scroll the screen about if you wish.

There are many config options in the app and I have found the setup that suits me best.

Only issue is that the screen refresh is a bit slower than VNC from another PC (especially my UX1 tablet) so the spinning discs aren't smooth but VDJ responds pretty instantly from the ipad. Iteleport has a special keys menu with F keys and such and can easily be invoked and VDJ script mapped to those virtual keys which is excellent. I have mapped the F3 key to chop mix two tracks together for example. All elements of the skin are clickable so it's exactly the same as running VDJ from your PC but with touch.

The battery life on the ipad is excellent and will easily last a 5 hour gig if need be.

I will post some photos and ipad screenshots when I get a chance.

Party on :)

Damn, that sounds pretty slick... there are no problems with latency over the wi-fi connection?

Basically a wireless, handheld controller, although without the tactile feel of hard buttons, rotary knobs, and jog wheels.

There is slight latency but it's ok. This will work well in a pub environment. Good thing is you can have your main pc and controller set up and just walk back to it if you want to mix. I have been doing this for years now (before the magical and revolutionary ipad) and it works great.

Wait the second. Are you saying that you can control the VDJ through iPad's touch screen?
If so, is there any video to show that?

Yes, it's nothing revolutionary or magic though, I've been doing the same with Windows based systems since 2004. The ipad is better though, it is thinner, lighter and has a great screen size. Battery life is also impressive so it's a good solution all round. I don't have any videos but if you have an iphone or ipod touch you can download iteleport and try it for yourself!

This is retarded.
I did it trough VNC Lite, though, and it's fun :)

Imagine Mac Mini + iPad and you are set :)

New mac mini, ipad, iteleport, adhoc wifi, and a little tinkering with the aspect ratio and I've got a cool touch-screen turntable

i really like iteleport with mac. there's no need to run a server, just use screen share. i open iteleport, it detects the mini, i click "connect" and there it is. very quick and simple.

The drawback is still the re-fresh on the ipad screen is a little slow.

OK, So I am using Win XP on a PC based Dell Notebook with VDJ Pro 6.08.

I know nothing about iPads or Intelliport, so before doing a bunch of research, can you tell me IF I were to buy an iPad and install this intelliport application, would I be able to control VDJ on my WIN XP Dell notebook???

Thanks for the response.

Another question???

What is VNC and/or RDP and why would RDP be better on a Windows machine?

You can use iteleport with windows xp machine. - I do that too. It's a little more set-up, because the xp machine must run a server, which may cost more money; there are free ones, though. I'm not sure if rdp is better. My advise would be to shell out the 25 for teleport. They have good support too.

Wanted to bring this topic back up. I tried this on windows 7 based machines using UltraVNC. Worked fine but the best I could get the screen on the remote laptop to refresh was once per second. Useless for video.

I am now using iteleport to connect to a 17" Macbook Pro running XP 32bit and the refresh rate is actually better. Maybe not perfect for video but certainly acceptable for general use.

Just a quick update .... if you have a Windows PC then Splashtop remote for the ipad is excellent. It converts your PC screen res to 1024x768 automatically to match the ipad when the connection is active (the default VDJ 2 deck skin in 1024x768 is perfect) and the screen refresh is fast enough to support video over wifi. There is also a dedicated server app for the PC so you don't need to install VNC server seperately.

For the ipad this is better than the VDJ remote app being worked on as it gives you the full functionality of VDJ on the ipad screen. It connects seamlessly and easily over a p2p wifi connection. Latency is now seriously not an issue.

Best of all the app is only £0.59 which is brilliant!

In short this thing is fantastic automix set ;) I tried it through 3G and man was it fun... SUPER CHOPPY and super choopy means its the equivilant of someone taking pictures out of a flip book and showing them to you one at a time.

Nice tho... lets hope that VDJ remote thing is better

Using splashtop remote for the ipad with Windows XP is perfect. Virtually no latency over P2P wifi and it's so fast you can even see the videos in VDJ perfectly.

3G will work but very slowly so wifi is the better option.

Also bear in mind the VDJ remote app is in it's early stages and doesn't include a browser. With the splashtop option you can load the VDJ default 1024x768 skin and have access to everything. There are also a couple of 1024x768 touch skins in development so you don't have to use the iremote app if you don't want to.

Here's one touch skin I am testing thanks to DJJB to give you an idea.

Here's VDJ running remotely on the UX1 on Windows7 with a 1024 x 600 skin. You can do this with any tablet device running windows as well.

This one has a stylus so you don't need a touch specific skin.
