Old time DJ and have been vinyl and CDJ's until now

Looking to get into some software usage as well but not quite sure on the hardware required

This is what I want to do:

Use VDJ with external mixer (Nuo2) and be able to record my mixes

Clearly i need a soundcard but not sure on how many inputs/outputs it will need for the above?
Any recommendations? Will the NI Audio 2 suffice for this job or do i need the 4?

Price is an issue so not going with timecode for the moment won't bother me so have been looking at the basic VDJ for now anyway.....will this be able to accomodate what I want as well? I understand the main differences between basic and full versions being midi support and timecode which I am not fussed with right now. Am I correct?

Appreciate any help

Forget the soundcard and go for two Pioneer CDJ-400s CD/USB players and a Pioneer DJM-800 mixer like I use with VDJ, and if price really isn't an issue, then go for two CDJ-900s or 2000s instead of the 400s, I am. Soundcards are built into the 400/900/2000 models. You can then record to an external recorder such as a Tascam Dr-1 or a Yamaha PockeTrac 2G connected to the Rec out on the DJM-800 mixer for the best results in recording your mixes.

If you're serious about being a DJ and recording your mixes this is the best way to go rather than using VDJ's built in recording feature with is really more of a novelty than a serious recording tool. Recording to an external recorder from a professional mixer with effects such as my DJM-800 allows you to make awesome studio quality mixes utilizing VDJ.

Hey, you said money wasn't an issue!

Keep Spinnin'!!

BTW: I'm also an "old time" DJ as you so eloquently put it, I've been doing this since '84, retired in '97 and came out of retirement in '08. I'm glad I did, I love the equipment available today and I love VDJ!

Actually he said the opposite ;-)

I run VDJ in my office (developer, not a pro dj) using a single soundcard with two outputs. My card supports dolby 5.1, but many cards have front and rear outputs. That is the minimum of what you need. (ok, to be fair you COULD use a splitter from Radio Shack and split the Left to headphones and Right to speakers, but since it seems your a pro, you don't want to do that)

There are controllers and mixers that have sound cards as well. It comes down to what specifically you want to do, and what you can afford. Since I'm not a pro I have a controller from Hercules: "DJ Control MP3", it was approx $200 and came with a basic version of VDJ.

Hope this helps a little.

Hi Slapa, I started out external Creative soundcard for about $50 U.S. and an old Numark mixer. I also just use the recording feature that comes with VDJ. It suits my needs. Hope that give you a start.

Thanks for the replies lads .....appreciated

DJRudeDogg....unfortunately money is an issue but good info there ;)

At the moment have just been recording my mixes (vinyl, cds) onto a desktop through line in and audacity

So does anyone see any problems with the following set up then?

VDJ basic
External soundcard (at least 2/2 inputs/outs)
Mixing with my Ecler Nuo 2 and mixes would need to be recorded
Recording mixes through the VDJ record feature

otherwise I guess could go down the VDJ pro route and get a controller like the Hercules RMX which I understand has a built in soundcard but I am content for now with my current mixer and just using a mouse to operate VDJ as I am still going to be heavy on the vinyl and cds

Will search for what people like in the way of external soundcards but any suggestions wont go astray! Will the NI Audio 2 cut it?
