Greetings VDJ Buddies,
Something I have kept quiet about over the last few months is that I have been training to run this years London Marathon. Having just finished my longest training run (yesterday) of 20 miles in 3hrs 47mins, I thought now would be a good time to let you all know.
I am raising money for a local hospice. The work they do is amazing, however when you realise that they are only funded by donations, fundraising activities and a small grant from the local Primary Care Trust (local division of our National Health Service) and that it costs over £4.6m per year to run the hospice you only then realise how important it is to get involved.
It was this time last year when I experienced the outstanding service provided by the hospice. To find out more specifically you can visit my JustGiving page here http://www.justgiving.com/gone-fishing.
So in just under 3 weeks (Sunday 25th April), I will be taking part in one of the biggest fundraising events in the world, and I am onoured to have been chosen to run for this worthy cause...
Not bad for a 40 something, soon to be grandad, 238 pound DJ...
Cheers,
Roy

Good on you Roy, I have been a regular runner since 1992. Took it up to help me stop smoking and got addicted to running instead lol. Went 'cold turkey' and have never smoked since :-)
I haven't done the London simply because of the prohibitive cost traveling from my end of the country.
Ran the Great North Run half marathon 9 times though! Best time 1.28:45
Erm......... the 'running' is more like jogging these days. 58 and three quarters, 3 granddaughters, whats 15 stone again? Oh yes 210 pounds.
Best 2 bits of advice I can give; use the best running trainers you can, drink at least a litre of water in the hour BEFORE you run and keep topped up with water all the way. Enjoy, you may become addicted too. :-)
Cheers

Cheers Les,
This is actually my second Marathon. Did London in 2006... However that was for a company charity - this one is more personal.
I've been offered a place in the GNR, buy the same charity - unfortunately am being retired from charity running by the Mrs... She is seeing less and less of me with me DJing two nights a week, running 3 evenings and then my long runs on Sundays.
Gonna keep up the running this time though. Living by the coast, it's great running up and down the promenade. In fact my 20 was done in exactly that way...
Cheers,
Roy

Well done mate, good on you!
I was wanting to do the Reading marathon this year, but unfortunately life got on top of me and it never happened...

Thanks Scott,
Hence the reason for me being retired... Unfortunately training for something like this requires a lot of time. My long Sunday runs have literraly taken up the entire day - well that is after laying in from working in the club the night before and then the hour in the hot tub after...
If you ever get round to it, let me know and I'll share my training programme with you. Not sure what level you are at, but mine is a beginner programme.
Cheers,
Roy

Good luck with the run!
I'm doing a half marathon in May, so I might just have to plug my race a bit closer to the time.

Are you running for a charity...? Sponsorship works both ways you know ;-)

Hahaha, beat you to it! It would be a bit unfair to mention the fact that I'm doing a race and not bother to sponsor you! :)
Yeah, I'm trying to raise a bit of money for Rainbows Childrens Hospice in Leicester.

Yes I managed to do both!!!
Not quite the marathon I was hoping for though. Did the first half in 2:20 which would have put me on a very good finishing time. But then shortly after crossing the halfway point, something in my shoulder went "ping" - must have been a tendon...
Moving my arm became excruciatingly painful so I couldn't run. Tried walking a mile, then running a mile, but just felt dizzy when moving my arm - I ended up power walking to very near the end, and mustered enough strength to run round St. James Park and cross the finishing line running.
Finish time 5h 44mins.
Money raised so far: £1,300 and with my fundraising event this Friday another £500-600 expected.
Thanks all again for your support,
Roy
