Topic: Do you consider VirtualDJ being Digital DJing? - Page: 1

This part of topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information

As many of u VDJ users like me have seen, Digital DJing has gotten a lot lot lot of hate from the more 'old school' djs. Now in all honesty, I understand why people may like vinyl more. It provides a more acoustic sound, and requires a completely different type of creativity versus CDJ/PCDJing. But when you are talking about the difference between CDs vs Digital Djing, especially meaning VDJ, I get confused at times. I currently have 2 Turntables (Numark tt200s), a hercules mk2 mixer, and some big ass speakers and amps, and obviously, my 4gb ram 2x 2.5ghz 320gb sager laptop (and external monitor for fun). Now I really dont see how using my numarks/hercules/mp3s is any different then using a cdj/djm/mp3s. The only difference I see is I can get mine cheaper (tt200s=$200, CDJ 1000=$1200) and more mixer options without needing a chaos pad or w/e, because both use mp3s, so whether I burn it or keep it on my PC, I dont see the difference. Now I agree that some douchebag that uses itunes or an ipod is some lame ass digital dj, or someone who mixes all their music with protools, and just presses play for a 2 hour set is a digital dj. But with VDJ and tractor and such, I see us more as like a CD DJ, just a bit poorer.

So tell me what you think

You can apply for the DJ-rank if you are a real DJ who plays with either vinyl or CD
(no digital DJ's are allowed!!)

Now I totally agree that CDs are digital too. But why do so many people hate virtual dj and SSL, but are ok with CDJs? They are both digital

Basically they are total prats and talk out of an orifice that is not normally seen, as a person that has probably DJ'd longer then they have been alive, played every media to get the music over to the crowd and still doing it, i know thats all you need to be a dj.

But as long as this dumb subject keeps popping up and people like yourself keep listening to them they will feel that the crap they are repeating is absolutely true, any media and a sound system and your the DJ by definition.

And please don't lets hear the usual I rock the room to x amount of people a night, because if it's a dozen or a room full your still the DJ.

Next time just laugh in their face, it sure makes me feel good... and it's always to the "real DJ" that is "having a night off" (yeah that will be right as well.)

You tell em Tayla.

I was followed from Gig to gig for about 5 weeks by a guy who was raggin on me for not using serato.

5 weeks.

Oh - he was a "Real DJ"

I see dj software as an easier way to have all my songs at once. Time codes is my number one choice.

mp3's on disc or playing mp3's through VDJ - Both digital however at least with the discs you don't need a sound card which could alter the output level.

OH MY GOD how many of these DJ type a-negative vs DJ type O Positive threads do we need going on at one time................WHO GIVES A FLYING RATS ASS who is and isn't a Dj or what type of Dj anybody else is......mind your own music everybody and shut the collective F*ck up about everybody else.

All these dj debates is making the rest of the world think DJ stands for Dumb Jerks.

Now that I have got that off my chest I'm turning my radio to coast to coast TALK radio and listening to REAL debates on Ufo's, ghosts, multiple universes, and esp....have a nice night everyone!

My friend has spent £££££ on some old school decks, vinyl's and mixers.

He came round my house, showed him the RMX and called me a 'Ipod DJ' but asked if he can have a go.

He had a go on the RMX on the computer and said it was really good.

Now he is wanting to go time coded, although he classes me as a 'ipod DJ' ? I don't get it.

I have been using Virtual DJ since it was Atomix. To answer your question, yes, but who cares. Since I no longer have to lug crates of 12s around and no longer have to worry about having my CD books just right. I'll be a Digital DJ till I die! I tell everyone a story about when I became a Digital DJ. I was at a party with a friend at a club, people kept requesting tracks he did not have, but instead of panic, he went wireless to iTunes, downloaded the tracks and got a heft $300 in tips. Ever since then, I been digital.

Tayla, I love your way of thinking brotha... "as a person that has probably DJ'd longer then they have been alive". Lol

I get this from time to time... "Hey! Why aren't you using Serato/CDs/Vinyl?" I tell them this... "Do you see everyone having a great time? Were you not just steady bobbing your head until you got up here? Now, you and I are likely the only ones who even knows what the hell Serato & VDJ are so do you really think it matters to them? I think not... Besides how old are you? 26? Wow! I was already a DJ when you were barely suckling on the teet! Now run along little boy".

I've used vinyl, CDs, Serato, Ableton and VDJ. VDJ is my choice and I will proudly stand by it. When these guys come up to me with their Serato/Vinyl/CD pride they usually leave my booth with their tails between their legs after I'm done with 'em, plus I'm no lil' weakling, so their approach is usually with caution.

Hey, I got my DJ name for a reason! lol

i consider this digital computer djing as tools to learn to dj. if u cant dj with montors off you're not part of the elite. im sorry. i cant. but thats my goal. i dont care that a guy before me has been djing for 10, 20 or 30 yrs. if you're lost with the monitor off you're not getting respect from the 5%ers.
there's something about vinyls that that cant be put in words.

there'r many ways of djing. vinyl heads, cd djs, computer djs, ipod djs.. etc.. what sucks is a dj who has no clue of what he's doing and acting cocky... most djs out there imo get a C+ grade. it takes only a C to dj. there'r some B's and very few to almost none B+'s. A is reserved for a really good vinyl hiphop dj. :D

i dont know y i wrote this post...

I've DJ-ed with Tape decks, 45's, 12" singles, CD, DAT, Super VHS Video Mixing, Time Code CD & Vinyl, done whole gigs with headphones, without headphones, with monitors, without monitors, used PCDJ, Serato, & VDJ.

Digital, Analog, there is no difference! It's ALL DJ-ing! The means is only the method to the madness!

Now can we stop this ridiculous argument once & for all! =)

Thank you!

Totally agree, I don't know why us older guys that started off when you could only get the black stuff respond half or any of the time, I suppose it's just to put the younger guys right, lol.

@Rude lets them know straight away I won't take any of their proverbial concerning what I'm using when gigging, and looking at your post nor do you.... lol

That's neither hear nor there... I can DJ with the monitors off if I want, that's how we did it back in the day, there were no computers running VDJ or Serato and there were no CDs. So if you must feel like that, it's subjective and means nothing to anyone but you.

I can say I paid my dues by running vinyl for over 10 years then CDs for even longer but it only means something to me. It doesn't necessarily make me a better DJ because I know how to manually beat-match and count BPMs with unmarked vinyl. I use software because it makes my life easier and I can do more,, not because I care if some noob-assed idiot that was born yesterday says I'm not really a DJ because I use VDJ... end rant... lol

whoa whoa whoa u went there and called me an idiot. :(
i have a few options to come back with
option #1 is laugh at you using virtual dj, but your comeback would probably be that you have serato and vinyl experience.
option 2 argue
option 3 just take the loss..

i'll just take the loss.

take the colts at -6...the saints aren't a real football team cause this is their first time at a superbowl....they haven't yet "paid their dues"

the refs helped the saints win with bullsh1t calls and they'll help them win the superbowl, or come close to winning. the superbowl is all about ratings and the refs will call bull calls against the colts to keep both teams almost even. they'll stop with the calls in teh 4th quarter to unleash manning.
