Topic: File reading via Browser

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Currently have trial version of VDJ, v.6. Do I really have to edit every file, individually, that has a (track) number in front of it, so that tracks appear in alphabetical order, as opposed to (currently) a mixture of numerical (i.e. track number) & alphabetical.
I recall doing this before with a previous 'demo'. It took me weeks!!!! (10,000+ files).
Media Player, although (presumably) reading the same file, doesn't have this 'problem', (to any great extent, anyway).
If remedy is relatively painless, have promised my mother she can buy me the full version.
Thanks in advance.

think you need something like tag and rename or something similar to re adjust the fields, once you have one of those and set the fields it takes a matter of seconds to get what you want.

All part of the joy of been a digital DJ I'm afraid.

Tag n Rename will do your mp3's but what about karaoke? Still trying to work that one out

Appreciate input here. Thanks. Sadly, link suggested is no longer available. Where do I find 'tag & rename'? Is it in the software of VDJ, in my pc, or do I have to acquire it from elsewhere? If so, where?

Genuinely grateful for the replies so far. But, & at the risk of sounding like 'Mr. Thickee', may I comment on some of them:

#1. Suggests that "once you have one of those...........takes a matter of seconds". Indicating: A quick fix?

#2. "All part of the joy.........I'm afraid". Indicating: Yup it's gonna take you some time buddy! (The opposite of #1.)

#3. Obviously I didn't t & r my files before importing them to VDJ. Why would I? Had no reason to suspect that VDJ browser wouldn't be able to cope. Not sure if it's too late to t & r files although I'm sure I can soon take them out of VDJ, do the (quick?) t & r thing, then put them back in again.
The link to 'Tagging The Easy Way' looked promising. But I'm not a registered user. So I can't view the blog entry. Presumably (& I'm guessing here), I can only become a registered user if I have some sort of serial number to quote/enter? And presumably I can only get the necessary number after I've bought the full version. But I'm not sure I want the full version if I've got to spend the next few months re-naming every bl**dy individual file. 'Cos if that is the only way, then perhaps I'd be better off spending my time researching alternative DJ software.

I know it sounds angry & bitter. It's not. It's sheer frustation. I'm not looking to break into the world of re-mixing/producing. I just want a program that'll competantly play (with a bit of beat-mixing) a few tunes at my local hostelry. But if the software can't even put the files in alphabetical order...............????????
I've paid my dues. I've lugged boxes & boxes of vinyl & column speakers up fire escapes in the pi**ing rain. I've mixed on decks with no pitch control. All I want to do is slide seamlessly into the 21st century whilst embracing the technology, which, I'll admit is fast leaving me behind unless I do something about it!
Rant over. Sorry, nothing personal guys.

What are you talking about, alphabetical order??? Just simply click on the artist or title box in the browser sorts... You need to tag your files BEFORE VDJ, not inside. When changing files inside VDJ this simply changes the file in the XML of VDJ to retain this info. This is the way VDJ works. I dont understand how you can be angry with a program without doing the research of the program itself.

Use Tag and Rename, or Dr Tag or many other programs out there to make your files the way you like them. I simply make mine Artist - Title (BPM).

OK I now see ur issues, but this isnt a thing that will take forever trust me, try tagging over 4000 videos and 30000 karaoke.. Just get one of those programs listed and you will see. Go to download.com to look for tag and rename. Just tryin to help you.

Hi Charlie Wilson

Here's a very good tool I use for Karaoke tracks, I know cus I use it, plus you can process all the sub folders at the same time.

What is very cool about this software is you can easily spot problems because of the way it displays the information, check it out I think you'll like it.

Good Luck

I don't know what I'm talking about, that's why I'm here :-) Seriously though, big thanks discobrian24, you've made things a lot clearer, & I'll definately follow up on the 'Tag' routes you suggest.
As I said before, angry, no..........frustrated, yes.
Love everything else VDJ does, so will persevere.
Still keen but green.

You will see once you get going you will be fine. Also if I remember correctly Dr Tag actually allowed you to remove the number from the track all at once, try it out. Just remember any tag changes outstide of VDJ require a Rescan for BPM inside VDJ.

Take your time and do it in chunks and do it correctly, then you wont have to worry about it again:)

I use MediaMonkey. This is a very cool media player, but with the some very advanced tagging tools. Plus with MMScript you can write your own tools ;-)

If you have already named your files <track#> - <title> - <artist>.mp3 for example, MM has a way of convertign that info straight to the MP3 tag with little/no manual intervention. It's all completely customisable too should you have different file naming conventions.

It's databnase is very quick too. I tend to use this as my "master", importing all tracks here, tagging/prep'ing them for adding to the Virtual DJ Database.

Not only that, I'm only using the FREE version...

Tagging aside, I can't see why putting the track number first is an issue. I can hoenstly say I have never searcjhed for a track in tis manner. Once you get a big solid library, track numbers are irrelevant. Simply use the search box to find the track/title/artist you are looking for. However this does rely on good solid tags to index.

MediaMonkey - Worth a download at least. I found Tag & Rename, quite simplisitic which was OK for my video collection, but needed something a bit more sunstantial for my music collection.

Cheers,

Roy
