Topic: PFL In Headhpones - Setup Issue or Bug?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Greetings all,

I've been experimenting with VDJ, version 6.0.3, for the last few days, and I have to say that I'm blown away with this product. I'm not a DJ, but I have put together DJ mixes using multi-tracking software in the past, and I've had plenty of experience playing in bands, so I know my way around a mixing board. The feature set and polished interface of VDJ is amazing, for sure. There is, however, one issue that I'm bumping into with using headphones to cue up music from the second deck, and I can't for the life of me figure out what I'm doing wrong. I've read plenty of other posts on the topic, watched several different video tutorials, yet I still can't get this to work properly.

I have a Realtek HD Audio sound card with multi-channel output capabilities, so my plan is to use the 4.1 front output and rear output method to route audio to the master and headphones, respectively. So, in the sound card setup, I set the Speaker Configuration to Quadraphonic. I then head over to the Config area of VDJ. In the Sound Setup tab, I select Input => None, Outputs => Headphone, Master->Front Output, Headphones->Rear output, Soundcard => 4.1 Card. In the pulldown list next to Soundcard, I select my Realtek sound card speakers from the list. I plug my headphones into the rear output jack in the soundcard, and I then try to play two different songs on the decks, with the cross fader pegged to the left (deck 1), and the PFL set on deck 2.

The sound coming from the front speakers is fine, it is of course the track playing on deck 1. Now when I listen through the headphones, I expect to hear a mixture of the tracks from deck 1 and deck 2, and I should be able to adjust the mix based on the position of the Cue nob. Well, the only thing I hear in the headphones is the audio of the track playing in deck 1; there is nothing output from deck 2 in the headphones. Playing with the Cue nob does nothing, nor does adjusting the Headphone volume knob in the VDJ interface make any difference. It's almost like the output that VDJ sends to the front speakers (i.e. master) is doubled and sent to the headphones as well. Interestingly enough, if I *reverse* the VDJ configuration option for Sound Setup outputs (i.e. get the master feed from the rear output, and the headphone fee from the front output), then the opposite effect occurs: I *always* get the PFL mix in both the front speakers and headphones, and the VDJ Cue and Headphone volume knobs start working.

Has anyone else had any experience getting this working? I have seen others with more or less the exact setup as me (Realtek HD Audio) wrestle with this and get it to work, so it almost seems like it's something I've configured incorrectly. Yet, I've double and triple checked all the settings, so I'm totally confused what the problem is, and I wonder if there could be a bug in the software. Hopefully someone can suggest a way to fix this, because without the ability to cue up the second deck through headphones, I probably won't be able use this to create live mixes. Thanks for lending a hand, it is much appreciated!

Change the Output selector for the Master/Headphones from Front/Rear to Front/Center (3rd choice in drop-down)

Hi, thanks for taking the time to respond. Actually, I had tried what you suggested, toggling the master/headphone split to front/center, respectively. So the effect this has is to make the audio of the PFL deck come out of the front speakers *and* the headphones. Adjusting the Cue knob then controls the mix between deck 1 & deck 2 for not only the headphones, but the front speakers (master) as well, bypassing the cross fader. I've also tried changing the Output setting to rear/front (choice 2), with the same result. Once again, it seems like the master & headphone feeds output by VDJ are doubled to the channel they're being sent to. When I select choice 1 in the Output list (Master->front, Headphones->rear), the master feed is sent to the front speakers *and* the headphones. When I select choice 2 or 3 in the Output list (Master->front, Headphones->center), the PFL/Cue feed is sent to the front speakers *and* the headphones. I need some way to split these feeds so only the master is coming from the front speakers, and the PFL mix is played through the headphones. I appreciate any more guidance you can offer. I would really love to buy a license for VDJ, but if I can't get it to function properly for previewing the cue deck through the headphones, I won't be able to use this for my mixes.

also put your windows configuration on 5.1 ! than it shuld work over the option

bluntfusion, thanks for the input, that was very helpful. I moved up my speaker configuration for the Realtek card from Quadrohphonic to 5.1, and I also changed my VDJ Sound Output option to Master->Front & Headphones->Center as suggested in the previous post. At first, this didn't seem to resolve the issue. But then I unplugged and re-attached my headphones in the jack on the sound card, and I was presented with a box to select the type of device (i.e. headphones, mic, front speaker, center speaker, etc.) that was being attached. Previously, I had always checked the box next to headphones, because, well, they're headphones, and all the other times I plugged in my headphones into the rear output jack, I'd only get audio from the headphones if I selected the headphones item and not some other device type. This time, for the hell of it, I selected the center speaker option to correspond with the new setting in VDJ. Bingo! I then found that the PFL/Cue feed was directed to the headphones, and the master feed was sent to the front speakers. The headphone volume knob now appropriately adjusts the level in my headphones, although the volume sensitivity is very slight; it won't get ever get very loud.

So it looks like this was a case of user error and not a bug in the application, although it was not simple to get this configured correctly, and I never read anything in the documentation or quick-start guides about using the front/center option for 4.1 sound cards (front/rear outputs are always suggested). Nevertheless, it's working fine now, so I'm happy and ready to start ripping it up! Thanks for the help fellas, much appreciated.
