Topic: Why convert? Video question

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I get Hot Videos every month and a buddy of mine was telling me that I should convert the VOB files to MPG. I guess my question is, if the VOB files play fine in VDJ/Cue why would anyone wanna do this? I've looked around on the internet for info regarding the advantages of VOB over MPG or vice versa. But I have yet to find any usable information.

Any help or direction would be appreciated.

VOB uses MPEG2 as it's video compressor, there's no need to convert Vob to Mpeg2. (Unless you want to lower the Bitrate to make a smaller file size) and stay with Mpeg2.

Some folks re-code their videos to Mp4 in order to get an even smaller file which personally I don't recommend unless you have a powerful machine, MPEG2 /Vob uses less computer resources to de-code than does Mp4. (Less chance of a crash or other issues)

I just simply rename the .vob to .mpg. Been doin it for years, its just habit.

Brian, I knew you can do that but why would you do it?...

VDJ reads both extentions with no problem. What is the advantage of doing this?

I dunno Renee, lol, I have just been doin it that way.

Some people might convert because they do not have the available hard drive space. With 1 TB drives for under $100 dollars, why would you. I just rip the DVDs each month. Don't have the time to waste converting them. Promo now offers as MP4, but I still prefer to have the DVD as a backup.

Thats the thing simply renaming them to .mpg doesnt convert them at all. I had issues in the past with Media player playin vob thats when i renamed them to .mpg. Slipped my mind there for a min Renee.
