Topic: hard drive encryption

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I would like to put a lock or encryption on my external hard drives so my dj's can't copy my hard drives that they use when working for me. Any help would be great.
Thanks...

If they can play the files, they can copy the files.

NO - 1) he can buy a Pc (Tower) & put all the files in the internal hard disk - (very cheap solution)
2) block all the usb ports ( physically with glue if necessary ) or put the tower in a box with a lock & remove any Cd or DVD .

NOw they can play the files But NOT to copy them .
When you want to put more songs to your library just open the tower and do it .

You can also put your PC in a locked cabinet (so , nobody can plug an Usb hard disk or burn a cd) - you can do a hole only for cables (for mouse , keyboard & monitor) - if the cabinet is small you can put 2 Coolers (for prevent heat)

I would tell them to buy there own drives.

I do not let other DJs use my drives unless I'm there physically, period! And even then I only let them use them on my system. I have only connected my drives to another system once and that's because I knew that this friends system is only used for gigging and nothing else, though it's still pretty risky.

Once a hard drive is connected to someone else's system, it can pick up viruses and other undesirable crap that can hitchhike onto the drive then into your computer when you connect the drive to your system.

Another thing, at a gig I won't ever used a burned CD, flash/thumb drive, SD card or any other external format except store bought CDs. I even have a clause in my contract that states that I reserve the right to refuse to use these devices on my system for requests. To much risk involved!

They could still easily rip the audio if they wanted the files that much.

If you want help doing so PM me. We have all our hard drives and MP3's encrypted and can not be played on any other computer, or software other than the virtual DJ on the machine the encrypted MP3's are on. You can not play the MP3s without a DONGLE, and a LICENSE. As good as encryption is, anyone can still steal music by playing the files in analog and recording them from the sound output. Would take them forever though if you have a MP3 library of 150,000 titles like we do.
