I just purchased the X-session pro as a backup and when I plug it in the program recognizes it but the problem I have is that the mapper buttons are all wrong. None of the buttons work the way they should. How do I fix this problem

Its easy, just select the key in config/mappers/xsession and change the script in the box to the right.
It will suggest, but if you look in the wiki you will find common scripts to achieve what you want to do.

I was trying that method but I couldn't get the commands to stay for each button. maybe I was doing something wrong. Do I have to save it after every button or can I do the whole device at one time? I will give it a try it again.

The following has sort of worked for me:
1 Select "Config" > "Mappers"
2 Choose M-Audio/Evolution X-SESSION at top
3 Click "{new}" at bottom of left-hand column. Then press button on controller. Then Type action in Action field
4 Repeat step 3 for each button on controller
5 Press "OK"
Two problems, one of which I may have solved, the other I would REALLY appreciate any help anyone has:
First, with the default set of x-session pro MIDI signals, VDJ seems not to be able to recognize the buttons, even though it does fine with the faders. It turns out the xsession has 10 sets of MIDI presets. They are changed by pressing the "A" button on the back of the unit with a pen or paperclip, waiting 2 seconds, and then pressing a controller button. I am now using the preset realized by pressing the right arrow button on the left deck (after pressing "A").
Although my bottons are now working, functionality is limited. In particular, I can't seem to get anything attached to holding the buttons down. So commands like "cue_play" don't work. I also can't get any assignment that reasonably lets me jog backwards or forward through the track (transit controls).
PLEASE HELP IF YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE!!!
It is very frustrating to have to do all my transit with the mouse. And please don't say the solution is to buy a more expensive controller ;)

You will need to add param_invert, e.g:
param_invert & pitch_slider

NOTE: In the trial, timecode is limited to 10-15 minutes per session and will stop working after that until you restart the software.
