I just bought a WD My Passport external HD and it accidentally fell like 18" from my bedside table and now it doesn't work. I was pissed that I knocked it off the table but it really didn't hit the floor very hard seeing as it fell such a short distance so I'm a little surprised such a short fall rendered it useless. Anyways, I bought it from Best Buy and I'm going to try to exchange it for a new one. I'm going to do the dishonest thing and not tell them I dropped it (the enclosure is still in perfect condition). Do you think they'll allow me to exchange it? Or, are they gonna tell me they have to try and repair it first and I'm going to have to wait 6 weeks or something?

Being a former Operations Supervisor (the guy that approves the returns). My first question is how long ago did you buy it? Most of these things under 1 year qualify for OCE (over the counter exchange). If there are any scuffs or even a small ding, they will likely say physical damage. If there are no blemishes at all, simply tell them it stopped working. It did stop working... Just don't mention the "after I dropped it 18 inches".

they will probly exchange it but I have to ask you what are you using the drive for? I dont like using drives that run on BUS power? I use a external with its own power supply and besides the Passpor runs @ 5400 RPM'S compaired to the 7200 I get. Also if you plan on storing VIDS on there it may hinder the performance of your laptop because its drawing power from it? just a little FYI

Thanks for your quick responses. Too answer your questions, I bought it 4 days ago and it looks totally brand new (because it is). And I use it strictly to back up my music, not play from, so it's only plugged in when I do my routine back-ups. BTW, do you think that the fact that I don't have the original packaging will make a difference?

who the hell keeps the packaging after you open something? not that many people. the only things I have kept the boxes to are my mixer, my speakers, my DMC2, my CD player and my amp.......everything else always gets trashed.

About the original packaging... I do not know the policy on that as it may have changed. But... If you get the exact same drive you can surrender that box and packaging and just leave with what you came in with.
This is what I would have allowed.
Each Operations Dept. is different. Which store will you be visiting?

Update: Not only did they take the Passport HD back but they gave me $45.00 refund too! Apparently the price dropped considerably since I bought the drive 5 days ago so they paid me the difference. F*cking A! And just like you mentioned, they just took the new drive out of the box and put the old one in.

I don't know of any company policy that requires the packaging in order to exchange or refund on a warranty issue. If you admitted that you dropped it they will assume that it's your fault and it won't matter either way about the packaging. Usually what they will do if it's a warranty issue is either take the new one out of the box and keep it (the box) for shipping back to the manufacturer or they will just take the old product put an RMA sticker on it and give you the new one, box and all.
I'm glad you got it sorted out though!
