I installed VDJ 3.4 on my new laptop (Vista...old one is XP) from my flash drive. everything looked great at first. I copied all my files and such from my old lappie to the new onevia my flashdrive.
I hooked up my external HD (All music is on it), loaded up VDJ and.............No cue points, no bpm's, no comments, no nothing. Just a hell of a lot of music that look like it has never seen VDJ before.
I have all my skins, all my effects, all my samples, just NO DAMN NUSIC INFO...Sorry, had to vent.
I tried again to copy the xml file over but again...no luck. The file is there but VDJ ain't gettin the info for some reason. So........
I TRIED to unintall VDJ and what do ya know........I get
Could not open INSALL.LOG file
I can't even uninstall the thing.
Tried system restore and of course.....It's still there. System restore did not remove VDJ.
I asked support for a fresh install of 3.4 and will try again from scratch after I get this bad 3.4 off this computer "IF" I can get it off.
Any help out there for me?

Andrew...you are speaking greek to me. I have no idea what you are saying or how to do what you are asking me to do.
I know a whole lot about DJ'ing, Very very little about computers.
I don't even know what a bat file is.

Select the text in the grey box and copy it. Open notepad and then paste the text into there. Choose file and then go to 'save as', make sure to change 'save as type' to 'all files'. Enter the filename 'remove.bat' and save it somewhere, e.g. to your desktop. Once it's saved, rightclick on the file and choose 'run as administrator'. Confirm any uac prompts.
It should remove virtualdj but there have been major location edits since the latest versions and the older ones. Therefore you may have to browse your 'program files' and 'my documents' directories and manually delete the virtualdj folder(s). Once this step is complete, goto add/remove programs (now called 'programs and features' in vista) and attempt to uninstall virtualdj. It will come up with an error but then remove virtualdj from the options. Your system should now be clean and ready for a reinstall.
However, VirtualDJ 3.4 is not Vista friendly (if you've installed it to the program files directory). Everytime you run virtualdj you will have to right-click on the shortcut and choose 'run as administrator'.

if you still have all the info on your xp box then you can do this,,
install vdj on your new system, copy the entire VDJ folders from your xp box and replace the ones on your new system with those of your old system, this "should" give you all your cue points and stuff on the new system,
if you have lost them on your xp box too then you are going to need some data recovery software and have a look to see if you can find the file.
if you ARE lucky enough to get them back, which to be truthfull, is a bit of a small chance, then be sure to BACKUP everything you need, store the important stuff on a pendirve and put it somewhare safe, like in your flight case under your turntable so it cant get lost.
one other thing, if the file has been RE SAVED as in the data in the file was over written by new data, then it is probably impossable to recover it, you would have to do some major digging to try and find a cure for that. ill have a look around and see what i can come up with but you gotta start looking too.

It seems that I am truly blessed because I got ALL my database back. Backup is now DONE.
I will tackle moving VDJ on another day. I have to recoop from the stress of losing soooooooooo much info right before a really big show.
I'm DJ'ing tonight with the legendary Chuck Brown (I feel like bustin' loose), Vibe Band, L!ssen Band, and Soundproof Band down at the Zanzabar on the waterfront club in Washington D.C.
Tht's gonna be a REALLY hot show. Especially now that I have ALL my info.
Phew

Sorry for going slightly off-topic here, but why on earth are you using such ancient version as 3.4?

That has been the last most rock solid version with none of the problems I have seen over and over since the beginning of version 4.0. Honestly, although I am on Vdj6.0.1 now myself, I still experience many of the same problems that many others do too, that we never had to with good ol' 3.4.

You hit the nail right on the head!

I have V3.4 on my new machine now with no problems except....
DATABASE
I copied the datbase from my old machine and placed it in the VDJ folder on my new machine. For some strange reason, it's not doing anything. When I open VDJ, no music is scanned, no cue points, bpm's, or comments.
I'm not understanding this but am willing to keep working at it.
Any ideas?

Did you get my reply to your ticket?
When you install on a new machine it creates the internal database file.
If you don't delete that one, it will not read the one you added.

BTW
The versions up to 5 can be troublesome with these database files if you've ever had one corrupt on you, its a headache.
All it takes is a power failure or forced shut down to do it nicely.
When you upgrade all of these problems go away and hot swapable drives becomes easy as hell and when you are working a back up machine its seamless because the database file stays with the root music drive and not the program file folder.
Dj's therefor could change shifts or add drives without stopping and have everythng right there.
Food for tawt...

Rick...
I have added to the ticket. It seems that even though VDJ is installed on my new machine, when I try to download a new skin or a resizer tool, I get a message that VDJ is NOT installed on this computer.
Very weird.
P.S.
I will download the newest version as long as I can keep 3.4 on the machine and keep both databases intact.

That is not going to work
You must select skins that are compatible with your current version.
You need to step through the upgrades or you will not have your data.
The database conversion takes place in 5 and it will only import from 4.3.
So you should install that first, then 5, then 6 to keep things intact.

Let me get this straight.
If I upgrade from 3.4 to 4.0 to 5 then to 6, I will be able to keep my database intact through all the upgrades?

That's exactly what I had done to go from 3.4 to 4.3 then 5.1, and now finally to six. Not everything was perfect however in the transfer of database info. Much was missing and needed to be rescanned.
Posted Sat 04 Jul 09 @ 12:48 am
Well thats the path that the rest of us took over time and we all have our data intact.
V5 is going to rescan on load to aquire key info that began support with that version anyway.
Nothing is ever perfect, but that is the concept on how the process should work.

Nothing is perfect, but in my case I lost a LOT of data in the transfers, esp. from 3.4 to 4.3, had to rescan over a 1000 songs. Also, I found several posts of many this was happening to. The old cliche "nothing's perfect", is obvious and been around and used for 1000's of years and we all already know that, but I think djCity may be looking for something that's at least half way there??
