Hey guys,
I'm going to be moving from the Caribbean to Florida (hopefully) to go to uni over there. I really love dj'ing and I was hoping I could continue it when I move. Only problem is that I dont know what type of music they are into over there and I was wondering if someone could give me a 101 about the different types of music for what audiences and stuff. Back here I usually do parties and fetes so I just know a lot dancehall, and obviously reggae and soca.

ye its Barbados,
I hopefully will be going to Nova which is in fortlauderdale......I haven't decided if I should live in the dorms or with my cousin off campus. But if i decide dorms, I guess there will be parties and if they want a dj I would be happy to play, and I will probaly look for a gig at a club or something for a little extra cash.
Rite, so i would be really grateful if someone could give me a 101 about the kinds of music that are popular here, popular songs and artists, etc..

Funny, I was just there in January

Met the dj on board, nice guy, hooked me up with some local music by de red boyz, great sound.
Love that place, the whole place went nuts when Obama was inaugurated.
Definitely the best stop in the west indies.

Florida is 500 miles long and 160 miles wide at its most distant points. It spans two U.S. time zones. It's population is VERY diverse because the majority of people who live in Florida are NOT from Florida but more often moved here from another state. For example you will hear a lot more country music in north Florida (Panama City) than you would in south Florida (Ft. Lauderdale/Miami) area.
Then we have our "Florida Keys" which is only technically part of Florida. Most people don't know there are not any real beaches in the Florida Keys. The Key's are actually exposed portions of an ancient coral reef so there's not much sand. The only type music permitted in the Florida Key's would be Jimmy Buffett, playing any other music is punishable by a lengthy prison sentence. (150 Years)
Boca Raton Florida was settled by people from the northeast U.S. particularly the New York City area. This means most people in Boca Raton Florida drive like crap, talk too loud and they still listen to Barbara Streisand. (How fugging sad is that).
If you were moving to Knoxville Tennessee I'd say pack your fiddle, banjo, and don't smile too long at the gas station attendant.
If you were moving to Atlanta Georgia I'd say pack all the hip-hop you have along with a FIREARM for personal protection.
But when it comes to Florida every town could be a different adventure so you may have explore a little to find your niche.
Enjoy your time while you are here. :^)

PS: There's no such thing as "Free Disney Tickets".... so don't stop and ask about them or you will be required to buy a time share Condo in Seattle Washington where you will be FORCED to listen to GRUNGE music which IS fatal if left untreated.

Hopefully this will answer your question, we play all kind of music, different club play different music. south beach is mostly house, rave or dance, with a little of hip-hop, downtown ft lauderdale is a mixture of everything there is about 15 club in a half mile radious. mast has white patron and play house/rave music, there is one reggae club with selector waggy T on a saturday that play reggae hip-hop and r & b mostly. then there is the spesailty clubs, there are Jamaican clubs that play mostly Dancehall reggae with a lot of hip-hop thrown in,and then there are hip-hop club that plays mostly hip-hop with some reggae thrown in. as long as you have a mixture of everything you should be ok.

I pretty much agree with Mackbolan. South Florida is by far the most diverse region of the state, musically. The Latin community and culture, henceforth the whole region, embrace all kinds of music. When I was spinning down there in the 90's I was always amazed at seeing the older couples out there grooving to techno, besides the salsa, reggae, etc... It was also cool to play such a variety - techno, freestyle, pop, salsa, merangue, disco, bass, every night, and still keep a full dancefloor.
The rest of the state is mostly Top 40/ Hip-Hop with a little breaks, reggae, and classics thrown in...
