Hi all.
I am very interested in getting hold of a touch screen overlay but can't seam to find one for a 19" widescreen format. I use an external controller but would like to get rid of the mouse and use a touch screen insted. Any ideas as to where I can get hold of an overlay for this size of screen. I dont want to use anything larger/smaller because my equipment rack is built for the 19" unit.
Thanks
Daz

I too have a touchscreen & I love it but as far as getting rid of the mouse, I don't think so what I have is a 19" touchscreen a keyboard with the mouse pad on it & that is it no mixer, no controller & no external sound card. It is the simplest system that I have & the best part it takes longer to bring it in than to setup.

Hi Vito
I use a DMC-2 controller and a DJM600 mixer but would like to have the touch screen to make some of the shortcuts easy ie extending loop length, effects selection and so on. Is your 19" screen a standard item with an overlay or a complete as one unit. I would like to know the make/model so I can take a look.
Thanks

The system referenced by Poohbear and the system used by DJ NutZ was created by my company ProDJpc.
For the user looking for an overlay, although we don't use them, there are a ton available that allow you to convert any monitor to a touch screen. Be sure to find one that doesn't require a stylus.

I personally wouldnt do an overlay, If I could do it again, I would get a 20+ inch touchscreen. Beware you can only have 1 cursor on the screen so multi touch isnt available yet, but I have heard you can do it with the proper monitor in Windows 7.
Now I dont have an overlay, I have used them in other aspects and can see a difference in reaction compared to a true built touchscreen.
I use my touchscreen along side an Evolution XSession as well as a DMC2.
Would love it if there was a way to widen the scroll bars in the browser of VDJ to eliminate the use of mouse.

Hi all
Based on what your saying perhaps a dedicated touch screen would be a better solution. If anyone has a recomendation on a 19" unit I would love to here from you.
I was thinking of making a post on the Skins forum to see if anyone has or is looking at a re-work of the browser area to accomodate just what you were suggesting Brian. If the font size can be made larger and the scrol bars made wider I dont see any reson why a touch screen could not be used without the mouse.

Daz,
There are in fact touch screens already in production that are "mutli-touch ready". As Brian mentioned, Windows 7 has the technology to make it work, we are just waiting for software developers like virtual to code it into their software.
All of the monitors that we use are multi-touch ready, do not use an overlay, and use an all glass screen. After exhaustive research & hundreds of systems in use, that's the only way I would recommend going.
With that said, the overlay is an inexpensive & realistic solution. I believe Discobrian is using an overlay and is most likely having good results.
My guess is that you could get an overlay for a 19" monitor for just over $100. To get a quality 19" touch screen your looking at between $600 & $700 depending on the technology.
I would also consider the different technologies. All have their strengths & weaknesses. The basic models include resistive, surface wave, capacitive & infrared. We currently recommend the infrared technologies as we find it has the best balance between touch sensitivity while resisting false touches like raindrops, insects, dust & spit.

I agree with Brian about making the vertical scroll bars and icons in that area bigger. I have special buttons on my skin & virtual keyboard that make some of the options more accessible. For instance on my keyboard, I added up & down buttons to navigate through the record case. I also added load from sidelist & waitlist buttons to my skin as well as a swap sidelist & waitlist button.
If VDJ made some of these things adjustable it would make touchscreen use even better.

Hi Greg.
Again thanks for the info. I have come across the infra red and resistive screens as I use them on the Flight Simulators that I work with during my day job. The ones we use are CRT screens with Mellordata and Elco ir overlays (quite old now). They just have an additional surround bezel that clips to the front of the monitor. I think I might try an overlay first to see how it goes and look at a replacement monitor a bit later as 6 or 700 bucks is a fair chunk of cash. I will see if the overlay wil do what I want first.
Thanks again.
Ps love the 32" idea, how cool is that!!!!!

Keep us posted here. I have tried overlay systems from other dj computer bulders that had better than expected results - certainly usable. I think you'll find that the touchscreen will end up being your favorite way to control virtual dj. To date, I haven't found a better control device. The touchscreen totally rocks!!
Any other device feels like a "middle man" to me. The touchscreen gives you direct control of your interface.
If you go that route definitely install Windows 7. It was written with the touch screen in mind. Microsoft really wants to be a big player in multi touch.

Greg I am not using an overlay, I just have experience with them here at the bowling alley and the users have issues at times. I got my 17 inch screen for like $500 about 2 yrs ago. The next "Version" of my system will have the 3 like Nutz and a total computer rebuild!!
I use this http://www.virtual-keyboard.com/ for my on screen keyboard.

Yeah Brian, you'll like the 3 screen setup. Although I think with multi touch, around the corner you may want to think about 1 big screen. I think the system might "throw up" receiving multiple touches from 3 displays. :-)
I know all about that Virtual Keyboard. I've been using it for several years. It's a very nice app.
I hope you up your posts. You've been doing a lot to help the vdj community.
