I will play what they asked first to make sure they dont complaint, but I always bring some of my taste. Remember they are paying you but it is still your reputation on the line so you still want to make sure that when your DJing the party is a sucess

This really depends on the gig that you are spinning. i personally spin breaks, trance, house and club worship and I always try to bring a very diverse amount of tracks with me. I normally have around 60-70 gigs worth of tracks so that I can always change it up if needed. I also create a few sets to work from. Now if you are spinning top 40 then you need to make sure that you have a pretty broad collection. You normally want to have an idea of what they are looking for and definitely know your music. Try to catch a vibe from what the crowd is enjoying and also what will keep the dance floor packed. I have spun many different events before and I have had an event bomb and the rest were very good. Biggest thing of all is to have a lot of fun with it and don't stress. Hopefully this gives you a broader perspective on your mix. God Bless.

Out of curiosity, what kind of gigs do you guys play where you're given a playlist?

I've DJ'ed a wide variety of places and formats and the ONLY time I really had a playlist so to speak was while DJ'ing radio (that sucked. I had a playlist and had to go down the list). Oh, and I guess technically, DJ'ing at a stripclub means having a playlist too since the girls sometimes pick out their music (though there are girls who just go, "Oh, play me whatever. Anything you think will make me money").

At any other type of club, I've never had a playlist. I've DJ'ed in clubs that were mainstream Top 40/Dance, clubs where the music was limited to classic rock (anything before '84), house, etc. None of those had a 'playlist' I could play whatever I wanted within the available genre, and could mix in music at my own discretion (for instance, at some of the mainstream clubs, I'd occasionally mix in electronic, i.e some house or trance that I thought would go over well).

As far as gigs, i.e. DJ'ing at parties/raves, when I got a booking, it was because the promoter felt he could draw people based on my fans/following, and as such, I just played one of my type of sets.

I've even DJ'ed at weddings too (which in my opinion, requires the widest music library of all the types of DJ'ing gigs with the exception of DJ'ing at a stripclub). At the weddings, I'd have a sort of playlist, i.e. a particular song for the wedding party's introduction to the reception, the Bride & Groom dance, Father-Daughter, Mother-Son, for the cake cutting, and a few songs that the bride and groom want to hear played some time in the night, but aside from that, I'm free to play whatever I think is appropriate. I'll get requests, obviously, and I try to play them if I can. But other than that, I play whatever I think will go over.

Most weddings tend to be a mix of generic stuff, typical dance music along with the corny 'everybody-knows-this' type stuff like the 'Chicken Dance', YMCA, Macarena etc. along with mainstream pop ranging from current Akon, Flo-Rida, etc. to Prince and Def Leppard, country music requests like 'Boot Scootin Boogie', but some wedding parties have more specific music genres. There have been weddings where they wanted ambient and electro during the dinner, and only electronic music for the dancing, and other weddings where they didn't want hiphop etc. Haven't done a solely country music wedding. Although i know some of the mainstream stuff, I'm not a big country music buff.

But I guess the question is, having DJ'ed all sorts of different types of gigs, I was just wondering what kinds of gigs you guys are talking about that have playlists where you would even have to ask or question whether it's OK to play/mix in other stuff.
