Topic: Jerky Waveforms are not moving smoothly anymore

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I did the update to the latest version of vdj on one of my laptops, running xp sp3 on a dual core @2ghz and my waveforms are not moving smoothly anymore, they are stepping, they do not flow smoothly like before, this pulsating /jolting movement is really tiring.
I there a fix for this symptom?

What soundcard are you using and in what mode?

whats your cpu usage?

This is a dedicated laptop, processor stays under 5% and goes to 50% bursts when is loading - most of the time is under 5% no matter what I’ll do to it

I tried all of my controllers/sound cards, the Denon DN-HC 4500, the M-Audio Xponent, the RMX and the laptop's internal card in wdm or asio where permited, with no inputs and safemode and overclock unchecked.
Tthis symptom is in any modes but is more accentuated with the RMX wdm to fast.(the only mode that the RMX is playing hiccup free)

With M-Audio Asio is barely noticeable, but with all of them the waveform is flickering is pulsating and is not in the same rhythm as the bpm, it flickers at different intervals depending of the zooming in and zooming out of the wave form.
I also tried few skins and all of them manifested the same.
Is this something related to the midi clock?
But then why is doing it with the internal card too?

P.S. Scott I did figured out the xmass tree setting in your Xponent mapper, great job like always. For a new release please try to get us the Pioneer cdj like cue play feature, like you did with the Denon mapper

Mine does the same thiing and I am running a 3.0 dual core with Vista, hd 4580 vid card. It doesnt effect my output so I dont bother. Is your output effected???

Bryan, no, my output is not affected, in fact I'd say that the VDJ sound is getting better lately, when I'm home practicing I use a pair of JBL L7 monitors powered by an Onkyo M-504 amp(this system shows no mercy to any sound flaws), VDJ through Xponent, the output straight through, with no tone corrections and my mp3s are alive through the VDJ's sound engine, the waveform symptom is just tiring when you do longer live sets and I would like it a lot better to have a smooth movement and be flicker free.
I wish somebody would find a fix for this problem.

Happy Spinning
Alex

how much ram is? maybe your using to much of it? i know if i use my computer to much i have to turn it off and on before it works right agian.

ram is plenty, 4gb installed, I could run this machine with no pagefile and still have a lot to spare

I've seen this on my machine but during times when the laptop is being bogged down by something or is too hot.

What type of processor is this? Just about everytime this happens to me it's related to the processor being overheated. This happens when the laptop is in a really warm room.

Maybe you can get an AC powered cooling pad or try reinstalling the application to see what happens?

Also, Lex.....I have heard of some issues with having too much memory and is this a 32 bit or 64 bit OS?

intel 2450
proc temp is low
32bit so I can't use the whole 4 gig it is registering 3gb of ram

Have you tried reinstalling?
Are you running this with timecodes?

Does the same thing happen when using a different soundcard?

Also, VDJ (under the config-browser tab) has a database check feature.

I don't think this will help all that much but maybe you can do a check\fix on your db files??

fresh install of what?

I do appreciate the input but before you answer please read the whole tread.

This is a dedicated machine, doesn't go an internet except for some windows updates, so I would rule out any corruption of system files or registry, hdds fairly new and good quality, were checked for errors and none were found.Ram also was tested.

I rarely use timecodes, this symptom shows itself, like I mentioned before, without any inputs and I did not test it for time codes yet.

And again like I said before I tried it with 4 cards.

So you want to say that your waveforms are not flickering?

I wonder if anybody else sees this flicker on their machines.

Maybe is corrected in the new VDJ6, can't wait to try it!

I've had very few issues on the PC version of VirtualDJ when it comes to jittering waveforms - even with 8GB of memory installed on my x64 machine. But I have noticed that the waveform does not slide across the screen as nicely on the Mac (stable or beta versions).

I do not have this problem in Traktor Pro 1.1.1 for the Mac with similar sound settings, so I wonder if it's just a problem with VDJ for the Mac itself? Any thoughts on this would be welcome.

My waveforms have never been smooth, but, as Brian said, it doesn't affect output, so I've come to ignore it...If I didn't mix by ear, it would probably bother me more.

I'm experiencing the same issue on my dedicated Dell xps ever since I updated to 6.0. It is quite annoying but thankfully the output is not affected. Itbdoes bother me visually though, especially since the three years of using VDJ has givn me smooth running waveforms. This might just be a glitch with the update, possibly it will be fixed in the next update.

it moves smoother in v6.01 but still flickers
my main concern was if this symptom is performance related like a pre freeze symptom, but no, it works as it should for long time and cpu usage is low so as long as doesn't affect the sound I can live with it, but it is tiring when you look at the browser for longer sets in a dark environment and have a bright screen, but hey, I could always put some tape over that part of the screen, anyway doesn't do much for me, mixing by ear is a second nature by now.
