You need to get VirtualDJ for controller support
(where MANY controllers will work)

You need VirtualDJ Pro to get many MIDI controllers support and options. Or You can get an Hercules DJConsole and get the VirtualDJ for DJConsole that came with it at the same time. It is not a Full version of VirtualDJ but is a version that work with that Hercules DJConsole.
To see the differences of those versions:
VirtualDJ Console Edition
VirtualDJ Professional
