Hi i am just trying out mixin some videos and i have a bunch of xvid music videos so i fort i would give them a try.
I loaded a video in deck 1 all ok but when i play it makes pc go slow for about 10 seconds then crashes vdj.
Are xvid videos compatible with vdj if not what are the best video files to play on virtual dj.
Thanks

Yes it will play xvid, sounds like you may have codec issue.
The "best" files in my opinion would be Mpeg-2 /.Vob

2 things you can try here:
1) Enter the config menu and choose the performance tab. You'll see an option with the heading 48kHz <-> 44kHz, try setting this to basic interpolation.
2) Enter the config menu and choose the codecs tab. Double click the avi option and change it to use windows mediaplayer video decoder.

Cheers andrew i tried both you suggestions and they work now.
Only thing is now when i load the video i get around a 10 second lockup of vdj before the video starts to analyze.
Can this problem be sorted or have i just got to live with it.

Turn off post processing in your video decoder. I'm not sure what decoder you're using so sorry if that seems quite vague.

Still got problem with post processing turned off.
Is there a specific xvid codec that is the best that will work with vdj.
Cheers

If you've not tried so already, you could try changing Virtual DJ back to video decoder but leaving the 48kHz interpolation as basic. If that doesn't work then the xvid codec in ffdshow (libavcodec) works well on my system. You can install it separately or as part of the k-lite codec pack:

I have tried changing vdj back to video decoder and then vdj just crashes like it did before.
I have tried the codec from the link you gave me but it still happens.
Do you think my best option is to just convert all my xvids into mpeg2/vob files as i gave it a try with a couple of videos and the vob files seem to play fine but they are quite alot bigger in size.
Thanks

That would work but has a few disadvantages, the biggest being the quality reduction in the transcoded video and audio. Would you be willing to upload the smallest xvid file which crashes virtual dj to a site like rapidshare? The developers would then be able to test it and find why it's causing virtual dj to crash. I can also test it to see if I get the interface freeze to see if it's a system settings issue.

I think Virtual DJ's own decoder struggles with the resolution of this file. However when using ffdshow (via k-lite codec pack) it worked and I did not get the freeze you have experienced.
I recommend uninstalling all codecs from your machine (e.g. divx, xvid, k-lite, ccc). Once you've done that, restart the machine and install the k-lite codec pack - when asked about what you want to install, leave the default options (however change matroska splitter from haali to gabest). On the last page just before installation starts enable the reset settings to recommended option and disable the speaker setup option.

I have tried the above but i am still getting the 5-10 second lockup of virtual dj when i load the videos onto either deck.
They play fine now without crashing virtual dj just that quick lock up i am getting when i load video which also freezes the video which is being displayed on my second monitor at the same time vdj is locking up.
Thanks

Have you tried running a few videos from your internal drive rather tha the external drive and see if you still get the pause.
Shooting in the dark here. --------------> Pow!

I looked into this a bit more and it turns out that there are some corrupted frames in either the video or audio (I think the audio). I used mencoder to recreate the avi using the good data, Virtual DJ could play this fine using it's internal video decoder. This method is better than converting to mpeg2 as there won't be a quality loss and the process is extremely quick. However, if you can get mpeg2/vob files to begin with (e.g. from promo only or mixmash's dvd services), you probably won't have problems like this.
The command line usage of mencoder is:

Hi andrew i have uninstalled all codecs and reinstalled k-lite i have also reset all settings in vdj then set them to what you have told me to.
I have noticed that the videos on the default vdj skin only give me a quick 1-2second lock up now but then when i change my skin back to mix lab v3.1(which is the one i use) i am getting the 5-10 second lock up again.
This has confused me a bit as i wouldnt of thought a skin would make any difference so i still think there is something i havent got set up right as each thing you are telling me to do the videos are playing better each time.
The one thing i have noticed which i didnt notice before is when i play the xvid videos i now get the little ffdshow symbol next to my clock on my toolbar which i didnt have before.
I am very grateful for all your help but i am still convinced they maybe just 1 or 2 more things i have to set to get these workin perfectly.

I have now just come accross another problem whilst mixin a few videos.
A few of the videos are playing the correct song that i have loaded into a deck but a complete different video.
For example i loaded craig david - 7 days video into deck 1 the sound coming through was craig david but the video that was playing girls aloud.
How can this be possible when i did not even have anything loaded on deck 2.
I am beggining to think that this video mixin is quite a bit unreliable on virtual dj either that or i am in need of some serious help setting this up correctly.
Thanks

Don't panic - this is easily fixed.
Highlight the craig david track - right click and selext remove linked video.
This happend when you drop a video onto the preview pannel when another track is playing.
You can disable the feature in the CONFIG--->VIDEO menu.
